Newly married Wayne Rooney has been questioned by police after allegations that he spat at a photographer

Manchester United star Wayne Rooney has been grilled by police following allegations that he spat at a paparazzi photographer while on a night out with wife Coleen.

Scotland Yard confirmed the England star was spoken to by police at a neutral venue after a third party made a complaint following the incident near London's Oxford Street on Tuesday night.

He now faces an assault charge following the incident.

Rooney was reportedly leaving a restaurant with his new wife Coleen when he 'flipped' and spat at an unnamed paparazzi photographer.

The alleged victim, who did not make the complaint, was also quizzed by police.

In law, deliberately spitting at someone is an offence of common assault.

A report is expected to be sent to the Crown Prosecution Service who will decide on whether to bring charges.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: 1At 12.10am on Wednesday we received a third party allegation that a photographer had been spat at by an individual outside a restaurant in Hanway Street, W1.

'Officers established the incident occurred at approximately 10.20pm on Tuesday evening.

'The alleged suspect, a 22-year-old male, was spoken to by police.

'He was not arrested and did not attend a police station. Inquiries continue.'

A spokesman for Rooney said: 'Wayne was interviewed by police in connection with an alleged minor offence. Wayne was happy to co-operate fully.'

in my defence, the word "may" is crucial here.

Me neither. Obviously wouldn't want them to get hurt or anything but I admit to a taking a little pleasure when they get their cameras smashed up and similar.

It's handy knowing your from Ireland, as when i read a post of yours i read it (in my mind obviously not aloud, that would be weird.) in a hard Irish accent, in a sort of 'Wurra buyt ya' fashion, and it seems to give more meaning to the post.
