Christopher Aurier, brother of Tottenham's Serge Aurier, shot dead in France

A younger brother of Tottenham player Serge Aurier has been shot dead in the French city of Toulouse, reportedly after attending a night club.

Christopher Aurier died in hospital after emergency services found him shot in the stomach in an industrial zone on the city's outskirts, French media say.

His suspected killer escaped the scene, a source close to the inquiry said.

Christopher Aurier, who was a citizen of Ivory Coast like his brother, was also a footballer, playing in France.

A Tottenham statement said: "The club is deeply saddened to confirm media reports that Serge Aurier's brother passed away in the early hours of this morning.

"We are supporting Serge at this difficult time and we ask that the privacy of the player and his family is respected. Everybody at the club sends their sincerest condolences to Serge and his family. Our thoughts are with them all."

According to a report by Europe 1, he was wounded when two bullets were fired at a night club.

Local people reportedly called the police when they found a man lying with a stomach wound on the Boulevard de Thibaud.

Emergency services arrived on the scene at around 05:00 (03:00 GMT) on Monday, French TV reports.

Christopher Aurier, 26, had played for local team Rodéo Toulouse - which was in the French fifth division last season - after stints at Racing Club de Lens, Gueugnon, Chantilly and Belgian club Rebecq, Le Figaro reports.

His brother Serge, 27, is a right-back at Premier League club Tottenham and also captains the Ivorian national team.

Tottenham have been one of the most inconsistent teams in the Premier League this season.

One day, they're suffering a 0-0 draw with relegation-threatened Bournemouth and the next, they're defeating an in-form Arsenal side in the north London derby.

For Jose Mourinho, there are clearly plenty of issues to iron out, but a win over the Gunners will do his team's confidence absolute wonders.

The fact remains, however, that Spurs desperately need to improve.

Only a year ago the club were in the final of the Champions League but now they're sitting outside the European places.

A spot among Europe's elite again seems unlikely, especially if they fail to significantly spend in the summer.

Mourinho's men have shipped a whopping 46 goals since he walked back into London and thus, signing new players to bolster the backline should be of utmost importance.

However, their chances of doing so look rather slim.

The current pandemic has impacted football clubs all across the globe and Tottenham are no different.

They recently borrowed £175m from the British government to tide them over and rightly so, they will be unable to spend huge sums of money on new players.

That was confirmed by Football London journalist Alasdair Gold who answered a question on his weekly Q&A determining that the club can expect losses of about £200m.

          He said:

"Definitely don't expect another £175m or so spent this season. It will be all about loans, swaps, free agents and players sold to buy others. The club estimate £200m in losses in the next financial year. Mourinho has already said don't expect big signings, just a few tweaks here and there."

          GIVEMESPORT'S Matt Dawson says...

This is absolutely disastrous news for Spurs supporters.

One of the main worries that emerged when Mourinho first entered the club was, would he have the necessary funds to spend?

The Portuguese has been known for throwing large sums around during his managerial career but his predecessor, Mauricio Pochettino, was hardly given much backing by Daniel Levy.

Tottenham didn't spend a great deal in January either so it's looking like a rocky start to proceedings for Levy and Mourinho.

The pair have already clashed over their attempts to bring Thomas Meunier to the club, a player who ultimately joined Borussia Dortmund, but the Spurs boss must reflect upon why he doesn't have the funds available.

This is an unprecedented time and unfortunately for the north Londoners, it's set to hit them the hardest.

A lack of revenue from retaining their Champions League place is bound to hurt and it's unlikely they'll spend any fees at all in the summer if they're facing such huge losses

                Anyone watched the documentary yet?

I've been really enjoying it - and what a revelation Mourinho is. Completely different to his public persona, and genuinely likeable.

As for Kane's motivational speeches though

I've always thought that regarding Mourinho. He did a documentary in his early Chelsea days, and he was very likable then, but an absolute whopper of a being when it comes to football, and what he'd do to win.

Feel sorry for UEFA Champions League and Premier League winner Jordan Henderson having to listen to Kane on international duty. I have a real hatred of Kane. Can't stand him.

I wonder what a difference a behind the scenes documentary following Mourinho in year 3 at a club would make?

I’m enjoying this though. It’s really eye opening watching Mourinho and Daniel Levy’s discussions. Like when they’re talking about Christian Eriksen’s future and they’re getting no indications from the player or his agent about what his plans are. They’re basically speculating and trading rumours they’ve heard, like a couple of regular office workers

I'll not bother watching it then, I enjoy hating him too much

Loved the first three episodes. Saw them a day after being released. I don't think Mourinho comes across that well, not as a coach anyway. Some of it seems staged (i.e. Mourinho switching the TV off when the pundits call him past it) but regardless, it's entertaining.

I hope we never ever do another one of these. £4m isn't near enough.

Next year, it’s United’s turn. What a story it would be when they win the league.
