Former England footballer and successful racehorse trainer Mick Channon has been injured in a motorway accident on the M1.

The 59-year-old was travelling from Doncaster Sales to his West Ilsley stables in Berkshire, when the accident happened on Wednesday evening.

Channon is believed to have suffered a punctured lung and broken arm and his condition was described as "stable".

His 14-year-old son Jack was also in the car but he was not seriously hurt.

A stable spokeswoman said: "He will be fine. It's not life-threatening or anything like that but he does have some broken bones and he's stable.

"The crash was on the M1 around the Leicester-Nottingham area and while it was a bad crash, in the grand scheme of things it's very mendable."

Channon is one of a rare breed who have reached the top in two different sports.

One of the best-known footballers of the 1970s, Channon made more than 650 appearances in a career spanning three decades.

He became a Southampton legend after 510 games in two spells at The Dell, where he still remains the Saints' leading all-time leading goalscorer.

He also scored 21 goals for England in 46 international appearances.

After retiring from football in 1986, Channon began his racing career as an assistant trainer to John Baker and Ken Cunningham-Brown before he took out his own licence in 1990.

He started with 10 horses in a yard at Lambourn but moved in 1999 to Newbury to West Ilsley (the prestigious stables once owned by the Queen) and now has about 20 times that number.

In 2002, he topped the 100-winner mark for the first time, a feat he achieved in 2003 when he also broke through the £2m prize money barrier.

And the arrival of Sheikh Mohammed as a West Ilsley owner in 2002 was proof that Channon was now firmly in racing's top league.

However, he is still craving his first Classic winner.

His racing portfolio includes horses owned by Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson and former England and Southampton team-mate Kevin Keegan.

look, she said it's not life-threatening. She probably smiled when she said it...

In the early seventies, STV made a documentary about ny dad down in Southampton. He bacame friends with Mick Channon for a while there and Mick ended up knobbing the producers wife! He was a bit of a boy and as a player...I loved him.

I just read that one of his best mates and business partners died in the accident, for some reason this wasn't mentioned?

Sad news about his partner. Glad to hear Channon is stable though - hope he is not in hospital furlong.

That's right, Channon's lad was in the car too but escaped with minor injuries, but yes his good mate died.
