    Extra substitutes

So after a week or two of having a couple of young players on the bench we have gone back to having a bench full of experienced players. I predicted that this was the most likely outcome for the big teams and I doubt we will be seeing young players getting a huge amount more chances from here on in. It's not just us but true of nearly all teams I have seen except Arsenal.

I admit it is very early to judge but I do think the PL made huge error by not placing any (age?) restrictions on the two extra places on the bench.

It was always gonna happen with the huge squads and teams having senior players away at the Olympics.

I agree that an age restriction should've been put in place regarding the two extra spots.
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

Yep. I just think that a lot of people seemed to believe we would see a lot more of our younger players and Rafa even said that would be the case. I find the reality a bit disappointing (even if I saw it coming).

was really hoping to see the likes of nemeth plessis and even pacheco getting regular positions on the bench.....

then when 3-0 up or cruising get them some game time even if its only 15 mins would work wonders for the confidence imo.

still though we have a big squad of senior players and its got to be hard to keep them all happy

i totally agree - in fact i remember when this first was discussed here i said somethin like the two 'extra' places on the bench should be restricted to 21 and under, and english/acadamy players. Nothing against the foriegn lads coming over - but it would surely benefit the acadamies, the youngsters and english football as a whole.

At the end of the day, I'd ****ing wouldn't care if we won the league with a squad of martians, world stars, or whatever. I'd just be ****ing made up. But you could you imagine if we managed to win the league with a team full of scousers! if the best eleven players in the world were all born and bred in liverpool and came throught the acadamy and dominated europe
i own everton fans on the internet....that's what i do

Thing is that its early season and the injuries havent really kicked in yet properly. Once injuries and fatigue start taking effect i think we will see more youngsters like Darby and Nemeth getting their places

Cant say I would really agree, apart from Uited we have had at least 2 of the kids on the bench.

                Sunderland

                N'Gog
                El Zhar

                Middlesborough

                N'Gog
                Plessis
                El Zhar

                Villa

                El Zhar
                N'Gog

El Zhar has had a few subs and Rafa was planning to bring N'Gog against United. As someone else said I think when injuries and tiredness kick in later on the season we will see it even more.

I would say that I was really meaning players we have bought young to develop. N'Gog was fairly clearly bought for the first team squad. We have done fine under Rafa in terms of buying young players who are ready for the team (Agger, Skrtel, Lucas and even Mascher and Torres were fairly young when we bought them). El Zhar made a couple of appearances but I can't see him making many more now we have a full complement of players back.

I think that's a good point. Also we were playing United on Saturday - Rafa's not going to throw Pacheco into that type of game.
The difficulty at the moment is keeping all the senior players happy. Pennant and Agger failed to make the bench on Saturday. I heard that Agger wasn't too happy. I assume Pennant is less than satisfied. If we leave more out and replace with youngsters it might have an effect on morale.
I'm playing all the right notes. Not necessarily in the right order. I'll give you that, sunshine.

Premier League plan subs shake-up to up number of young 'home reared' players

The Premier League want to introduce a rule next season whereby two of the seven substitutes on each bench must be under-21s developed at the club's academy.

                      By Henry Winter

The move comes as Uefa and Fifa step up their plans for quota systems.

Concerned that many players are graduating from academies and then struggling for games in a foreigner-filled division, the Premier League are keen for "home-reared'' youngsters to be involved on match-day.

The plan, which should have been brought in for this season to coincide with the increase of substitutes from five to seven, is also designed to help England, although the rule would not differentiate between foreign youngsters developed at a club and English.

Two of those starting on the bench for Arsenal at Blackburn, the 20-year-old Dane Nicklas Bendtner and the English 16-year-old Jack Wilshere, would both qualify as under-21 academy graduates.

Chelsea would need to promote some of their youngsters, as Saturday's bench contained Juliano Belletti, Didier Drogba, Alex, Hilario, Branislav Ivanovic, Wayne Bridge and Salomon Kalou, none of whom would meet the proposed academy under-21 requirements.

Liverpool would also need to alter their bench with their seven comprising Steven Gerrard, Sami Hyypia, Ryan Babel, Diego Cavalieri, Andrea Dossena, Fernando Torres and David Ngog, none of whom qualify. Manchester United have plenty of "home-reared'' talent but few regular bench-dwellers who meet the under-21 requirement.

The Premier League scheme is a softer version of Michel Platini's Uefa's plan to bring in quotas based on age, not nationality like Sepp Blatter's Fifa idea of 6+5. For this season's Champions League and Uefa Cup competitions, English teams must abide by Uefa's 4+4 stipulation: four members of the 25-man squad must have been trained by the club for a minimum of three years, from 15 to 21, as well as four more developed at other English clubs.

Very unlike the PL to want to do something for the good of the game.
