    gazza arrested

Former England international Paul Gascoigne has been arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage.

Northumbria Police would not confirm the identity of the man in custody but it is understood to be the former midfielder.

Gascoigne, who has battled alcohol addiction, was arrested at a house in the Dunston area of Gateshead on Thursday morning.

A force spokeswoman said: "A 41-year-old man was arrested at an address in Ravensworth Road, Dunston this morning on suspicion of criminal damage.

    "Inquiries are ongoing."

It is understood that the former Newcastle, Tottenham and Lazio footballer was arrested following an incident with a freelance photographer outside the The Metz Experience pub.

Pictures were published in national newspapers on Thursday showing 41-year-old Gascoigne trying to get in for an early morning drink.

Newspapers reported that Gascoigne banged on the doors and window for 20 minutes and even tried to gain entry using his own keys to unlock the door.

In February, Gascoigne was detained under the Mental Health Act following an incident at the Hilton Hotel in Gateshead after he was said to be acting as a "potential menace".

That followed an incident at the Malmaison Hotel in Newcastle hours earlier, where the hotel said Gascoigne made other guests and staff feel "threatened".

His daughter Bianca Gascoigne said at the time that her father needed "respect and privacy" to get back to good health.

Gascoigne has been treated numerous times for drink and mental health problems.

He had an illustrious football career and is still perhaps best known for his exploits in the 1990 World Cup finals in Italy, and at Euro 96 in England.

He appeared 57 times in an England shirt and scored 10 goals for his country.

But the talented midfielder, who also played for Scottish giants Rangers, has a troubled history of emotional instability and erratic behaviour.

Once regarded as one of the world's finest footballers, Gascoigne's playing career was plagued by personal problems, many linked to his heavy drinking.

In 2005, he was admitted to hospital with pneumonia, sparking fears over his long-term health, and last year he underwent emergency surgery for a perforated stomach

I do feel sorry for him.

I know we've been over this before but I saw those pics of him trying to get into that boozer at half nine AM and it's impossible not to feel sorry for the fella. He is a chronic alcoholic. To have gone from national hero and genius footballer to the state he is currently in.........the mind boggles. He's got no direction in his life....no point other than getting leathered.
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

most of us will have had someone in our families suffer from alcoholism - i have 2 uncles who know nothing else its really sad to see someone like that. i grew up working in bars part time and would often be there watching them getting drunk from early doors then often asking people for 'a lend of a score' etc

i had to quit a certain pub cos i could watch them doing this anymore. when i go home now they dont even recognise me or me them. they look old and their eyes have a lost look - it will kill them eventually

****ing nearly pissed myself when i saw the photos of him trying to get in using his own keys, He'd be the luckiest man alive if his front door key also opened his local boozer

He is just a sad old drunk now though and i find it very hard to feel sorry for him
We managed to rectify it, though, because it now says, "Cook" where it once said "Cock", and "Pass" where it once said "Piss", so it’s slightly less rude.

I don't feel in the least bit sorry for this waste of space and sick of the papers 'sob stories' expecting me to

he seems intent on drinking himself to death despite the efforts of those around him, so let him

I do sympathise with some homeless drunks who have ended up on the street as a result of financial worries, a family argument, a messy divorce or being made redundant that has driven them 'over the edge'

                  Keep this quiet
if you carefully grind off the edges of a 50p coin you can use it as a 10p

I don't think you can really pass comment on anybody without knowing the full circumstances that got them there.

Yep, I've always been this side of the fence on the Gazza situation.

I think reading his books helps you understand what a mess this lad has gone through during his life.

Gazza's always been a tool but alcoholism is an illness, a mental affliction. I hope the poor sod finds some peace.
