The England and Manchester United star was picked up by a Highways Agency patrol after Coleen Rooney's Range Rover Sport V8 broke down.
The 23-year-old was heading eastbound on the M62 in Cheshire when the £90,000 customised 4x4 vehicle shuddered to a halt between Junctions 9 and 10 at Warrington – one mile on from the service station where he made the mistake.
Slow-moving traffic meant passing motorists were able to get a good view of the striker in his predicament. Flushing petrol from the giant car's diesel engine could cost as much as £6,000, according to experts.
One motorist said: "It's a busy section of the motorway and the traffic was running slow, so we got a good look. The hazard lights were flashing and Wayne was talking to a Highways Agency patrol driver. He looked pretty sheepish."
It is thought Rooney was travelling back to his home in Prestbury, Cheshire after visiting family in Liverpool when the incident happened in Monday evening's rush hour.
Burtonwood Services confirmed the striker was at the wheel when the Range Rover visited the petrol station.
One member of staff said: "Wayne was driving and it was him who filled up the tank. It's a shame Wayne picked the wrong fuel. It's an easy mistake to make, but most people only do it once because it can be quite expensive to have the engine flushed out."
What a silly thing to do wayne
