    Cahill appeal fails

Everton midfielder Tim Cahill has lost his appeal for wrongful dismissal over the red card he was shown in Saturday's 2-0 defeat by Liverpool.

Cahill, 28, was sent off for a challenge on Reds midfielder Xabi Alonso after 80 minutes.

The Australian international will start a three-match ban immediately.

He is eligible for Thursday's Uefa Cup tie against Standard Liege but misses his side's games against Newcastle, Arsenal and Manchester United.

After the game, Everton manager David Moyes said he did not think the tackle deserved a red card, and he thought referee Mike Riley may have increased the punishment as Cahill walked away from him when he blew the whistle.

But that would have meant two yellow cards, not a straight red.
Bad news, we could've done with him playing against Arsenal and the mancs.

Yes agreed, but you'd want the bitters to have as much chance as possible.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher was quick to offer his condolences to the unfortunate Cahill......

Have to say I'm a bit surprised at that decision. I didn't think the tackle was all that bad and certainly deserved no more than a yellow.

What's that..............A bitter..............Oh yeah, he should be banned for at least 10 games. Well in Riley!

How do you come to the conclusion that they'd have a better chance WITHOUT one of their best players, than they would WITH him?

Because now they'll play 442 with Saha and Yakubu up front. They were class at Hull in the second half playing this way coming back from two down. Beggars belief that they went 451 agaisnt us.

i think his reaction after was the reason the ref showed him red
he basically ignored the ref when he was tellin him to go to him
he was givin it the big un - similar to the ashley cole one when he turned his back
i think riley was 4th official at that one too

                      glad its been upheld

One way of looking at it.

Playing Arsenal and Man Utd is a bit different from playing Hull though

Even with Cahill out, i dont think they'll go two up front.

Riley was the referee in that game, Steve Bennett was the fourth official. And he got a bollocking for not exerting his authority, so four days later, he showed what a big man he was by sending Mascherano off at Old Trafford.

                              Spot-on

Cahill also has a reputation for being a **** on the pitch as well, not that Riley would be swayed by that of course.
