Platini and Carragher back salary cap

by Robin Hackett, 09 October 2008 [Setanta]

Uefa president Michel Platini believes a salary cap will need to be introduced ‘for the good of football’.

FA chairman Lord Triesman said earlier this week that a limit on wages may need to be reintroduced to stop clubs going bust as Premier League sides owe an estimated £3 billion collectively.

And Platini believes a wage cap would benefit the game.

“That is another part of regulating football,” he said on Setanta Sports News.

"We have to speak about the number of contracts in the clubs.

“We can speak about salary, but I am not an expert – I am an expert of football, of the game. The rest we have to learn.

“We have to go slowly and to look at what we can do, but it is necessary for the good of football."

Meanwhile, Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher is also behind the notion – but joked that he hopes it will come in after he has retired from the game.

He said: “I hope he brings it in when I have finished!

“The most important thing is the football clubs are part of the community and if bringing a wage cap in is going to stop a club going bust then I am sure it has got to happen.

“The most important thing is the football club and what that brings to the community.

“It’s about the man on the street and the supporters. No one is bigger than the football club.”
"The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

Sign all the best players on ridiculous wages I say, pay them whatever they want, then when this wage cap comes into effect you can just tell them "sorry lads, £50,000 a week is the cap, nothing we can do about it".

Serious, if there is more talk about this, do you think we will see an increase in wages short term?

I would love to see a wage cap combined with a signing-fee cap etc. I however think the best way to do it like in american sport, where you have a cap on the whole team instead of on individuals. That we you have a certain amount you can spend on wages, sign on fees etc. and share it among your players as you see fit.

Would make the sport more interesting in the long run
