Everton to use football manager database to scout players

Today heralds a new era for football management as Everton Football Club becomes the first club to officially recruit the services of a computer game and its developers as part of their back room team.

In a football and gaming first Everton FC has signed an exclusive deal with Sports Interactive, developers of the football management videogame Football Manager, to give manager David Moyes and his coaches unrivalled access to its database of over 370,000 players and staff. Everton will be able to instantly scan 20,000 active teams in more than 50 countries worldwide with immediate access to the largest scouting network in football with over 1,000 scouts from around the globe.

The unique database has made Football Manager the most popular football management simulation in gaming and will help Everton FC spot the best young talent from around the world. In the past, Football Manager has accurately identified Wayne Rooney’s potential talent when he was just fifteen and has been the first to predict other future stars including Lionel Messi, Ashley Young and Jose Baxter.

The game’s original creators Paul and Oliver Collyer have been approached by clubs wanting to sign the game in the past, but this is the first time they have put pen to paper to hand over the game’s database and bring virtual football management into the real world.

    Paul Collyer comments:
“The game’s database is a valuable resource with the most extensive scouting network in football so Everton FC is making a top signing. I am personally delighted with today’s announcement as I’m a Toffees fan. Standing on the pitch with my signing on shirt is as close to my boyhood dream of playing at Goodison Park as I will ever get.”

    Studio Director Miles Jacobson adds:
“We’ve known for a while that teams use the game to research certain players, whether to buy or to check out the opposition, but this formal recognition by a premiership team is fantastic and we are sure it will prove a fruitful one for the Everton FC.”

I know we joke about the good in CM business but to be honest they are never far wrong from their scouting considering how badly some managers make it anyway.

IIRC the makers are Everton fans so it would make sense.

In a lot of ways it makes good sense to make use of such a resource but you have to wonder what advantage it is over buying the game?

An Evertonian friend of mine says it's to get "early access" to the database. Not sure if it's a terrible idea, but it's unlikely to get them a competitive advantage...

If it were to work, you'd have to have Andri Sigborrsson and Dale Watkins knocking in 30 goals a season in the Premiership...
The above facts belong to everybody; the opinions to me; the distinction is yours to draw...

I reckon its a good idea, lets be fair if anyone spends the time on researching players like SI do then it makes sense to use that knowledge, even if its just to get a head start in sending scouts out.

He was actually really promising but made of glass, his younger brother is even more promising but also a bit fragile, Kolbeinn Sigþórsson plays somewhere in Holland I think.
              * The above is posted in my opinion. Feel free to disagree.

Surely if I was a manager for another club, I would make the club buy me a powerful computer and download the game and nick the same players....

the daabase everton get to use has a lot more detail than the database on the game. they also get all the info earlier. FM has over 1000 scouts around the world. Cant see it being a bad thing for them. They also get all the contract details of all the players as well. as well as the players named above they picked up Pato and Kaka as kids as well as countless others.

I'm only surprised that no club has done this before. I expected this to happen years ago. They get over 1000 scouts working for them all over the world.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

So by buying the game you're indirectly helping Everton - nice.
