City start spree with £10m deal for Bridge

    • Left-back set to join from Chelsea on four-year deal
    • Scolari may now move for CSKA Moscow midfielder

Manchester City are expected to confirm the signing of Wayne Bridge within the next 24 hours after a fee in the region of £10m was agreed with Chelsea last night. It is understood that Bridge will arrive in Manchester for talks today and, assuming there is no problem with agreeing personal terms, the 28-year-old will complete his switch from Stamford Bridge and kick-start a spending spree at Eastlands that may well have wider implications for the rest of the Premier League.

The recruitment of Bridge will come as a relief to Mark Hughes, who had long identified the left-back as his No1 choice to fill a position that has troubled City for some time. The former England international spent 5½ years at Stamford Bridge but was a peripheral figure following the arrival of Ashley Cole in 2006 and has not represented his country for 18 months. Regular first-team football at City should provide the platform to revive his England career.

Hughes had considered making a move for the Germany international Philipp Lahm if Chelsea refused to sell Bridge but the west London club appear to have deemed City's offer for a reserve left-back too good to turn down. He is set to agree a four-year contract at City and, although the club will be reluctant to match the £4m-a-year wages he earned at Chelsea, he is unlikely to be out of pocket after collecting signing-on fees and other monies due after he moved without requesting a transfer.

Whether Bridge's departure will change Chelsea's strategy in the transfer market this month in unclear. Peter Kenyon, the chief executive, had previously indicated there would be no new signings but the money from Bridge looks likely to go towards at least one purchase, and the CSKA Moscow midfielder Yuri Zhirkov is reportedly a target.

Some will regard the club's decision to sacrifice Cole's deputy as a gamble. Luiz Felipe Scolari does not have another recognised left-back at the club should Cole pick up an injury and the Chelsea manager has already suffered as a result of trimming his squad to 24 players in the summer.

Bridge signed an extended four-year contract at Stamford Bridge after Scolari took over but he has made three Premier League starts for Chelsea this season and just 12 appearances in all competitions, a record that was in keeping with a frustrating spell at the club following a £7m move from Sothampton in 2003.

He now finds himself at a club with an even wealthier owner, with the Abu Dhabi United Group that took control of City at the end of August, before unveiling Robinho as their first recruit hours later, expected to bankroll as many as five other new signings before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

Good signing by City. He is better than Cole IMO.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

Good bit of business by everyone but Chelsea if you ask me. Bridge needs regular games, City have gained an experienced and very good player. Chelsea have a hole in their squad, what a shame it would be if Cole got injured for a few weeks!

Good signing for city, but not something that will take them where they want to be.

And 10 mill is over the top for a player that has mainly spend time on the bench at chelsea.

Decent safe buy. If they really want to challenge at the top they need a lot more of the same. And a new manager.

They will get in a new manager at the end of the season, most probably Mourinho.

He will also be able to attract the top class players they want.

Just as expected. Given his age, talent etc I'd put Bridge's value at approx £6M. City are being forced(?) to pay roughly double a player's value. Even with all their money I think it will take years and years to challenge if they ever do at all!

I actually think it is a somewhat brave but definitely correct decision by Hughes to concentrate on getting a strong base of good players to build on in future. So far this season they have done very well going forward but been abysmal at the back and all recent title wining teams have had the base of an excellent defense.

In their current situation they were unlikely to be able to get ambitious players of the top rank. For a year or so I think they will have to settle for players on the fringes for some reason or those who are up and coming stars rather than the established marquee names.

I agree about the balance to the side, but even if they're after defenders, given their big talk from a while back, their fans might've expected someone a bit more 'glamourous' than the (albeit solid but) somewhat lower key Wayne Bridge.

Definitely but if I was a City fan I would be glad that the board have accepted that they need to leave singings to the manager or at least football related staff. Undoubtedly after the initial take over and the original loud mouth front man they had their they will have expected more but I guess there is still time.

Naturally, but if you were a City fan, i doubt you'd have been stood in front of the Sky Sports News cameras last August, moronically chanting "we've got Robinho" either
