The thing is that the end of the Mourinho reign wasn't filled with glory. It is difficult to disentangle whether it was the interference or the fact that the squad had by then been weakened.

Your point re Drogba is true also, but i'd argue that Drogba was lively under Mourinho because Mourinho got that out of him. Scolari and Grant havent been able to motivate Drogba because they're not in Mourinho's league.

When it comes to getting the best out of what he's got, i struggle to think of anyone better than Mourinho.
      1st/2nd para -

You'd have to see which players he signed exactly, but IMO going on what I'm pretty sure is Mourinho's philosophy (very much transition based) the players he had were absolutely perfect for it

Contrast to Scholari who seems to prefer more progressive play with more short passing etc I don't think the players he's inherited are suited to it quite so well.

End of the day though you're basically right

I didnt say anything about him tactically.

He's the best motivator out there, IMO.

In my view, by that stage, due to various things including the interference as well as the impact of Chelsea/Mourinho becoming more hated and less respected/appreciated, Jose Mourinho himself had begun to lose his own motivation, drive and passion.

I think he'd had enough and would've walked out of his own accord had he not been sacked.

Mourinho is a charismatic fella, no question. But dont kid yourself he plays attacking free flowing football because he doesnt. In my opinion we are far better off with Rafa, should Rafa get the sack then I wouldnt be against having Jose in, but not in 1000 years would i swap Rafa for him, Rafa oozes Liverpool whereas in my opinion Jose is a bit of a classless tosser who was perfect for the chavs.

I think Mourinho's Chelsea played more attractive attacking football than we do. I think it's a myth that they were 'boring' to watch, i just think they tended to go 2-0 up and leave it at that, rather than going out for more goals.

When they had Robben and Duff they played some great stuff. Less so at other times IMO.

Agree with that, in the latter part of his reign their main tactic seemed the long ball to Drogba and Fat Lampard feeding of the remains of the 2nd ball to get his customary deflected goal.
                    We come not to play.

That was Mourinho's main squad in 2005. Far superior to what Scolari has to work with, thats all I am saying.

If Scolari was given the money to spend like Mourinho (over £50 million in 2005) he would do just as well IMO, I mean despite their poor season they are second only 4 points behind us.

                          I'd go along with that.

I think that they simply operated on a 'do just enough' policy rather than a 'play boring football' one.

Do you really consider that to be 'far superior' to Scolari's team? I'm not so sure i'd say that mate.

I think the value in Mourinho is getting the players to play for him and the club, making them want it and getting the most out of them, in terms of effort and commitment.

I dont think Scolari (or many others) are in the same league as Mourinho, where that is concerned. His Chelsea side, even regardless of personnel, had a sheer drive and passion whereby they wouldnt even accept that they might lose or not win the title. Scolari's Chelsea simply doesnt have that mentality, as far as i can see. Even the players who played under both Scolari and Mourinho, who were full of drive under JM, look totally devoid of desire under the Brazilian.

Craig_H, I think you are not happy with the urgency of our play, which you translate as maybe a lack of desire or lack of motivation on the players part to go out there and really win games emphatically.

The way Rafa plays is far more calculated though, and I wouldn't necessarily say this controlled approach is my favourite either but it is the way his teams play and it has got us to the top of the league so it is difficult to argue against it.

Sure, under Mourinho we would let some of the shackles off but then maybe we would be left exposed to counter attacks and that is where so many teams are at their most threatening.
