This fella has had 5 or 6 Premier League games and has probably courted more controversy in that time than most seasoned veterans.

He made about 4 or 5 out and out mistakes tonight. Neither of Carlton Cole's yellow cards should've been yellows. Lucas Neill's challenge got him a yellow - it was a vicious clear cut red card. I'm surprised he had the where-with-all to send off Cattermole.

He's 26 years old and been fast tracked to the Premier League, but for me, he's making big errors on an almost game by game basis and it's all very well encouraging young refs, but this fella is making hugely costly mistakes and the repercussions for some of his victims are sizeable. And that's without even mentioning the 'ghost goal' he bizarrely gave, when the ball never went in the goal.

Surely he shouldnt be refereeing in the top flight?

Any thoughts on this fella?

What i dont get is that it's ok for him to ref 'low profile' Prem games but he's not allowed near any of the big teams. What's the difference? You're either good enough to ref or you're not. Surely this is unfair on the teams he gets to ref.

He is a SHOCKING ref mind.

Its a PR stunt which has gone terribly wrong and its the Football League, mainly, who have to suffer for his lack of experience. Its not all his fault in terms of he hasn't asked to have been fast tracked through the system, football referees like many high pressured jobs require a huge amount of experience; although the incompetency of some of the our 'finest' referees, brains and bottle is what lacks.

There is some amount of sympathy for the position he is in although the decisions he has made hasn't helped. When you have people like Neil Warnock banging on about you at every opportunity, it must feel like there is a huge amount of pressure for Atwell to deliver and prove everyone wrong.

The Referees Association won't do much to be honest; they'll keep him refereeing the Premier League games just to show how 'right' they might be.

For me, the Neil decision was the only one he got wrong. Getting that one wrong lead to the Cattermole incident etc, but I don't think Cole can really complain.
