Tory MP aims to woo Liverpool voters by applauding 'role model' Gary Neville
Role model: Gary Neville has been applauded by Tory MP Chris Grayling

The Manchester United captain, who famously “can’t stand Liverpool people”, was hailed by MP Chris Grayling in a speech to the home affairs committee.

“I have spent time on the streets of Toxteth with some very good youth workers, who told me that kids are growing up without any parental guidance at home,” said Mr Grayling. “If I was to pick a good role model, it would be Gary Neville, an estimable professional over a long period of time,” he added.

Speaking about ideas to tackle gang life and knife crime, Mr Grayling singled out Newcastle’s Joey Barton - a Scouser - as someone who has set the wrong type of example for young people.

Described by the Liverpool Echo as a Manchester United fan, Grayling has been appointed by Conservative leader David Cameron to revive the Tories’ fortunes on Merseyside.

Grayling has lobbied for industrial contracts to be awarded to Liverpool companies, but his admiration for Neville will win him few friends in the city.

Neville may have been articulating a widely-held view when he said “I can’t stand Liverpool, I can’t stand Liverpool people, I can’t stand anything to do with them.”

But those comments, and his ostentatious celebrations in front of Liverpool fans following United’s victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford in 2006, have helped cement his hate-figure status at Anfield.

Neville ran half the length of the pitch to celebrate Rio Ferdinand’s winner in front of the travelling fans, and was fined £5,000 by the FA for improper conduct.

When i first saw this i thought it must be Phil Neville, he at least plays for one of the Cities teams......But Gary Neville.... Then again the Tory **** involved is a Manc fan so that fits, but to use a manc player to win over scousers....What a plonker.

Whatever he hopes to achieve, and some of his aims are no doubt worthy, to pick Gary Neville to 'aid' his cause in Liverpool is just plain stupid, negligent even.

Well yes, it shouldn't really be a surprise given the anti-Scouse agenda that the Tory papers have peddled since the bleak days of Thatcher and Ingham.

It's rare that it slips out in quite such a blatant fashion though.

Gary Neville - role model for Liverpool youngsters !

                        WTF !!!

A Conservative MP has proved that football and politics do not mix by advising youngsters in Liverpool to look up to Gary Neville.

Chris Grayling, the Shadow Home Secretary, put his foot in it when he told the home affairs committee that the Manchester United captain was the perfect role model for the disaffected youth of Merseyside.

"I have spent time on the streets of Toxteth with some very good youth workers, who told me that kids are growing up without any parental guidance at home," Grayling said. "If I was to pick out a good role model, it would be Gary Neville, an estimable professional over a long period of time."

Neville, who has played for United for 17 years, has made no secret of his hatred of Liverpool. "I can't stand Liverpool,” Neville said. “I can't stand Liverpool people, I can't stand anything to do with them."

Lool. Good to see the Conservatives haven't changed since I moved overseas.

Still a bunch of doddering old pricks with a complete lack marbles or even a clue how to use 'em.

Nothing wrong with Carragher. He's a local lad who could have ended up in gangs, but he worked hard and became a legend.

He's even had the odd mild boil over to prove he's just a normal guy and not superhuman, but nothing serious enough to tarnish him.

                            None better really?

Admittedly not a scouser myself so could be barking up the wrong tree, but I can't see why he wouldn't be the perfect example.

Yes he would but lets face, that would require a Tory actually thinking.
