    Ben Foster

Can anyone work this one out?

He's in the england squad, fair enough, by virtue of the fact that there isnt really one standout english keeper, so all of the semi decent ones seem to be getting a go.

But SSN are doing some ridiculously unnecessary feature on him tonight and Aidy Boothroyd (yes, i know but still) was interviewed and claimed that he thought Foster would go on to become the best goalkeeper in the world. Yes, you read that correct, the 'world'.

    Have i missed something here?

    What a load of crap.

Like you say it shows more about the lack of an outstanding alternative than it does about his own ability.

He seems to be a good keeper but I think Aidy's been taking smack.

If he was that good, surely he would have taken over from Van Der Saar who isn't in the top five keepers in the Premiership, never mind the world.

      I'll name them:
      Reina
      Friedel
      Given
      Schwazer
      James

How can you possibly say that Cech isnt one of the PL's top 5?

He's not what he was, but he's still in the top five.

Fair enough, still better than Van Der Saar though.

Schwarzer is basically very erratic and doesn't deserve to be there. He's nowhere near close enough for a top 5 place.

The thing is that people always underrate the decision making and consistency there of in top keepers. The reason why united keep with VdS and Arsenal Almunia is because these skills are amongst the most valuable for a keeper at a top side. The requirements are slightly different from those to be an outstanding keeper at a lesser side.

For me Foster lacks those qualities probably through lack of experience. The fact he has played so little and is now 26 (maybe 27) indicates to me he will never be a top keeper. He may well have the talent and I guess it is fair to use Almunia as an example of a late emerger as a keeper.

green's one of the best goalkeepers in the premiership, and i think he deserves a go as england number 1.

at least he's not injury prone, and plays regulary for his club - and is a very good goalkeeper at that.

****e at organising a defense though. He is one of the better options. Kirkland has come on leaps and bounds since he stopped getting broken every other game. I'd like to see either one given a chance above James who I think has proven that he isn't really reliable enough at the top level.

Is Foster that old? I thought he was only 22/23?

As others have said if he was as good as he is supposed to be he wouldn't be only 2nd/3rd choice at United but rather groomed to take over from the aging VDS.

Born in April 1983 apparently so I was aging him a bit, but he is older than people think.

He really is! I thought he was around 22 myself. At 26 he needs to be 1st choice, personally I dont rate VDS that much and think foster, given a run of games, would be a better choice.

He will never ever become the best goalkeeper in the world.

Less than a year younger than Reina.

James? No way. One of the worst goalkeepers. ^^

i think vds is a very good keeper his dstribution sometimes lets him down. but he is 37/38 and not sure in foster or the other one they have a replacement reckon they will spend big in the summer on a keeper and foster will move on
