Well it was my bad, I said 'the best' and I meant 'one of the best'. Sven was nowhere near as bad as some people want to make out he was. England were very competitive but he probably lacked the balls to play Stevie G in a position which suited him, wanting to accommodate him with Lampard in central midfield, which backfired IMO. And he persisted with Owen, who was poor at the time.

Apart from that, Sven did a decent enough job.

I think Fredos comment is perfectly defensible to be honest. Having not won anything you can say that most of the managers have been nothing special and Sven was at least consistent.

England managers since Sir Alf Ramsey:
Don Revie - crap, didn't qualify for Euro 76
Ron Greenwood - relative success, got to England's first world cup in 12 years. Like Sven, didn't do enough in the second stages of the competitions
Sir Bobby Robson - possibly the best world cup campaigns since Ramsey's time in both 86 and 90.
        Graham Taylor - utterly awful
Terry Venables - semi final in the Euros, lost again to Germany, on penalties
Glenn Hoddle - One tournament and lost to Argentina, didn't like him
Kevin Keegan - couldn't get out of the first stages of Euro 2000. Less said about Keegan's managerial style, the better
Sven Goran Ericksson - did well getting into the competition but once a Portuguese speaking team played England, the team fell apart.
        Shteve McClaren -
Fabio Capello - five in five so far however lost to both Spain and France in friendlies.

From that list, Robson and Venables did a far better job in terms of finishing positions than Ericksson, therefore your point is null and void.
Just read my previous post. I didn't phrase my initial post properly. In any case, the way you made it out felt like he was one of the worst and by the list you've just made, he's probably better than most in there, and I think I can safely say he's an equal of both Venables and Robson, who both only one competition in charge. Venables had Euro 96 on home soil, which was an obvious head start and Robson did a magnificent job in leading England to the semi finals of the world cup.

Well, Sven's record isn't bad at all. Quarter finals in european and world cups (3 in all) and he's managed for 6 years, which is a good record for an England manager. That's quite a decent record.

Far from Robson's and Venables' records. Come off it.

Bobby Robson - two World Cups, one quarter loss to eventual winners Argentina and one semi loss to West Germany, again eventual winners.

I'll give you Venables had a head start considering they were at home.

To say Sven was the best, was a major exaggeration. One of the best, possibly. As I said, very good in the qualifiers however the side didn't have that extra bit when it came to the knockout rounds. Against both Brazil and Portugal, they lead and capitulated.

2 European cups, 1 failed to qualify, 1 failed to get past the group stages (and not by a slim margin, disastrously failed at the bottom of the group).

            He had his lowlights too.

Say what you like about Sven, he never failed to qualify, never failed to get out of the groups. I just don't think he would have ever got us past the quarters so personally I don't think he was the best, however the facts do actually back up Fredo's argument.

              He should retired. He's bad.
