Not too surprised to not see Torres there, as he has missed half the season with injury, but quite shocked there's no Alonso in it. VDS and the united defence kept 11 clean sheets in a row, so it's not a big thing to see them nominated.

    But Ronaldo?? And Giggs?????

Just shows that the players are equally or more so influenced by the UK media.

Pretty meaningless when all is said and done.

PFA....Could be players respecting Giggs as a professional and staying at the highest level in his mid 30's?

actually think for his age and his adaptability giggs deserves to be there
          Ronaldo
still scored a lot of goals this year
          Van Der Sar.
ridiculous.....reina and even given have been better this yr
          Vidic.

It's voted in January, based on the 2008 calender year i think. In which case, Torres should be nominated.

But VDS is in there based on the CL final shootout. Cant really argue with Vidic or Ferdinand. Ronaldo's always going to be nominated. Giggs? Well it's clearly based on how much respect his fellow pros have for him and his career. Which is fair enough, but not the criteria for this award.

Someone has just told me that Giggs has started 11 games all season (I assume that is league games). It true then it's a ****ing farce really. It's not the "who has been a great servant so let's get sentimental award". It's who have been the absolute best players in the Premier League this season (or calendar year or whatever).

                Worst list ever!

Reina has been better than Van der sar

HFT can giggs be nominated in this when only playing half the games??

Anelka could proberly be in there. Alonso would be another miss.

When it comes to defenders I think it is purely down to the run of 10(?) games without conceding that made them appear there, eventhough chelski has led in fewer goals and we equal them. Proberly explains van der sar as well.

What a ****ing joke. I understand Vidic and Ferdinand - two really good defenders who kept like a gazillion shut outs but Van Der Sar, Giggs and Ronaldo - that really takes the biscuit. Alonso, Barry and possibly even Anelka deserve to be in there (top scorer)

I think its Feb/March when its voted for, I reckon if the vote was today Gerrard would win but its probably Vidics.

Yes, they did...but was VDS not part of that run?? How you can understand the inclusion of the defenders, but not of the keeper, is bizarre...maybe Reina ain't all that then, and it's just the defenders in front of him making him look good??

During that run, on average, Van Der Sar made three saves in a game. It wasn't like he was peppered like possibly Scott Carson is.

Reina is a lot assured than Van Der Sar at the back. He can control crosses coming in - hopefully even tonight - makes far better saves, doesn't drop or flap the ball as Van Der Sar has done plenty of times this season i.e. Anfield. All you have to do is ask a United fan, is Van Der Sar the best Premiership keeper?

Living in Manchester, as i do, i can tell you what the majority of them say, just by listening in at the pub...yes, VDS is the best in the league.

Oh dear From the small minority I know of, they believe its either Pepe Reina or Brad Friedel.

A big part of being a goalkeeper is that you do things to prevent shots at goal though and VDS is quite good at those things. Carson may make loads of saves but is his positioning, organisational skill or composure anywhere close to Van Der Saars?

Reina is better all round though.

I also live in Manchester & none of the Scummers I know think he is.
                                3rd place. Worst champions ever.
