    Damned United

Just reading David Peace's book (excellent read and a must for all fans) and the text is littered with the repetition of how the Leeds Utd team of Revie were dirty and corrupt. Hounding refs at every turn, raking tackles and general sportsmanship and allegations of referee bribes and bias.

This all sounds very familiar with another team ending in united. But I wonder for all out there that are old enough to remember, was there similar allegations directed at our club when they were in their pomp?

We're Leeds actually that dirty? Or was it the soft London clubs that gave them that label?

Brian Clough always referred to them as dirty and when he took charge he immediately put them off side when his first team talk was basically "right, we're going to stop playing like cheats". Lol.

Regarding us, I don't remember our prime too clearly as I was a nipper however I don't think we really had a lot of hatred directed against us.

We didn't have ridiculous funds and we played good football so there wasn't really much too hate without openly using the jealousy card.

It was only really after Heysel we started to attract negative attention. And even then it wasn't too strong as everyone knew they had elements in their own crowds who had the potential to do the same so throwing stones was dangerous.

Could be wrong of course, being a kid I may have been in the wrong circles to see it.
