Xabi Alonso and Gareth Barry back on the agenda

The site has been inundated with emails and comments from Liverpool fans over the last 24 hours, asking for clarification over Xabi Alonso´s future at Anfield and a comment on the reports of a deal involving Gareth Barry...

At this moment in time, the situation is as follows:

Florentino Perez, the clear favourite to win this summer´s presidential elections at Real Madrid, will try and sign Xabi Alonso from Liverpool. In fact, almost all of the prospective candidates are likely to include Alonso on their wanted list, as their is a growing sense amongst all associated with Real Madrid that the club needs to sign more Spanish players. And as far as Madrid are concerned, Xabi Alonso fits the bill perfectly in terms of nationality, position, quality and potential availability.

Xabi Alonso would have been sold last summer, had another club met Liverpool´s asking price of €20 million. Real Madrid will make an initial attempt to sign Alonso for that amount, but they will need to increase their bid significantly as Liverpool feel that Alonso has improved.

However, should Real Madrid offer Liverpool a fee in the region of €30 million, then Xabi Alonso will be sold: at that price, both Liverpool and the player would be happy for the deal to go ahead.

If Xabi Alonso is sold, then money would be available for Rafa Benitez to revive his attempt to sign Gareth Barry from Aston Villa. Despite recent media reports, Liverpool have not made a 9.5 million bid for the English midfielder.

Aston Villa have set a fee of around 12 million for Gareth Barry, and while at this exact moment in time there has not been a renewed attempt to sign him by Liverpool, there are no denials from Anfield that Gareth Barry remains a genuine target.

Alonso's had an excellent season but €30m (if true) is a pretty tidy sum and would give us some decent options in the transfer market.

        Hard not to consider that.

Wouldnt even sell him for that TBH. He's been intergal to our great form this season. Agree with Titties above.

As long as we replace him and don't rely on Lucas, I think we could use the money to make better overall.

I'd be annoyed if after this season we sold any of our core. Even if we improved the quality of the squad player for player I think the unity and understanding developed this season would still stand us in better stead.

If we were looking to offload a few of our regulars then I'd agree, but Xabi going, someone like Barry coming in and a top attacking talent as well, I think that would be enough of a confidece boost to compensate.

Anyway, I thought you always argue that Xabi's limitations restrict our play?

I do think he does at times but I think we need to add options not reduce the ones we have. I think we do need a more mobile option at CM but I would like to introduce that as an extension of what we have already. Last season we didn't function well enough in the central areas for me, this season, most of the time, we have.

I dont think we should sell alonso, even for 30 million euros. What next? 70 million and torres can go? 75m for gerrard? No thanks.

Top clubs dont sell their best players, they build around them.

We're a top club, not a selling club. We're not spurs.

how can anyone seriously beleive losing xabi and bringing in barry could compensate anything. iknow everyone has their own opinions on this subject but come on......barry is slow and hasn't got nearly half the passing ability that xabi has got. it is a huge step backwards to even consider selling our most important midfielder. he is just as valuable as torres or stevie. we would be lost without his passing and eye for oportunites. to lose xabi the only way to improve would be to lure iniesta or xavi from barca and as that ain't happening you would have to be retarded to sell xabi.
