England ace Barry in £12m City switch

GARETH BARRY will be wearing a sky blue shirt next season after Mark Hughes today clinched a £12million move from Aston Villa to the City of Manchester Stadium for the highly-rated England midfielder.

The 28-year-old Barry, who has become a talismanic captain during 12 years and almost 400 games at Villa Park, was a target for several Premier League clubs following a high-profile chase by Liverpool last summer.

The former England Under-21 skipper's ability, versatility and character made Hastings-born Barry a natural priority target as ambitious manager Hughes tackles the second phase of his Blues revolution.

With Player of the Year Stevie Ireland having committed himself to a further five years at City, Barry's arrival at the club after signing a five-year contract means Hughes will have one of the Premier League's most formidable midfield rosters.

The City boss had warned his rivals that he likes to move quickly once he identified his wanted men, and Barry's move has been completed while most of football is still enjoying a post-season break.

Barry, who has 29 full England caps, is currently with Fabio Capello's national squad at their Hertfordshire hotel preparing for Saturday's 2010 World Cup qualifying match in Kazakhstan.

He also captained England Under-18s and joined Villa from Brighton as a trainee in 1997. As his career flourished, his versatility emerged and he shone at centre-back and left back as well as across the midfield.

They've got a pretty good front 6 lined up:

        De Jong
        Ireland Barry
        WrightP Tevez? Robinho
He's only thinking of the £££££££ - simple as that - f*cking mercenary

You know what we are better off without him IMO. Joining city just shows he has no ambition and dosen't hve the right mentality to fight for the LFC shirt.

I have to say I’m shocked at this. I thought Barry was actually one of the last footballers with integrity - one main club and an ambition to play for a bigger club who is actually in the Champions League rather than one at least a season away (maybe more) even if they were willing to pay a **** load of cash. I guess I was wrong.

I thought he would be with us next season and would have been an excellent addition to our squad because at the end of the day this game, football, is about squads rather than teams these days.

            Oh well, next!!!

All he has said the past 12 months is i want champions league football blah blah blah and now he has joined a team who arn't even in europe never mind the CL. How are the villa fans feeling now he has left them for a team below them?

Manchester City have completed the signing of Gareth Barry from Aston Villa in a £12million deal.

Barry has penned a five-year deal at Eastlands after agreeing personal terms and passing a medical.

Barry said "I have been a life long Man city supporter, city or champions league, it was an easy decision. The money city offered never came into it"

The England international's future at Villa has been the subject of speculation for some time with Liverpool failing to sign him last summer in a much-publicised tug-of-war with Villa.

Barry contract at Villa was due to expire next season and although Villa offered him a new deal he has opted to make the move to ambitious City.

The 28-year-old becomes City's first signing of the summer and his arrival is a major boost for City boss Mark Hughes as he looks to build a side capable of breaking into the top four.

                    Villa fans are not pleased!!

If he'd gone to Arsenal, Chelsea, Man Utd or Liverpool, then I'd have said "Fair enough, you wanted Champions League Football and we couldn't give it to you, good luck mate, I'll clap you when you next visit Villa Park", but he's gone to a club that won't even give him UEFA Cup football next season! So the reason he gave for wanting to leave Villa is all a load of old bolloks.

Lying b@astard! Leaving us for a team that finished 4 places below us. Leaving us, not in search of Champions League glory, but in search of cash.

Screw you Gareth Barry, I'll certainly be booing you when Man City come to Villa Park next season, you money-grabbing, Judas, b@stard!

Official on the Man Citeh website now.

I officially hate him now, not because I wanted us to sign him, but because he blatantly took the cash offered to him. Villa fans are going to hate him. If he had left for a team challenging for domestic and european honours fair enough, but he's joined a joke of a team, that are direct rivals of his so called beloved Villains. ******.

It reminds me of Lucas Neill - another mercenary. When he has won f*ck all at the end of his career, he'll regret not joining us.

Maybe he heard we were no longer insterested in signing him, but even that is no excuse for him joining Citeh. If no one esle was interested he should have just signed a new deal with Villa, they are a better club and have showed great loyalty to him over the years, making him club captain etc. What a way to screw over your own fans.

Im glad hes gone and personally I dont blame him at all. Its fairly obvious to me that City will be pressing the top 4 soon enough, certainly within Barrys contract, and so who can blame him. **** only knows what sales pitch they used to get him - "we will be buying him, him, him, him & him" Good luck to the lad, thank **** hes not coming here! Happy days!

Man city are going to be like Leeds united. Buying loads of player for mega money and winning **** all.

Glad Barry's gone to City though, hopefully we'll keep Alonso and that'll be the end of it all.

For us to have spent £12m on a player we didnt need, would've been a poor move.
