    Platini purrs over barcelona

    Posted 20/05/09 09:48 [Football365]

UEFA President Michel Platini has nailed his colours to the mast and left everyone in no doubt that he will be supporting Barcelona in the Champions League final.

It has long been suspected that Platini is not a fan of English football and he has now told Spanish newspaper El Mundo: "Barcelona represents my philosophy, not just in their style of play, but how they form their footballers.

"I believe players should be protected until they are 18, more for moral reasons than economic ones.

"They embody the ideals of Spanish football, which represents technique, an easy and open style of play. It seduces me."

This comes just a day after Dutch football legend Johan Cruyff said he "did not buy" the English domination of the Champions League because of the over-reliance on foreign players.
"The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."
    -- William Blake

Cruyff's got a point though. English clubs are very strong but compared to what Barcelona does, that is produce their own players and Spanish at that (not all of them though) is a credit to them. They've had a philosophy and stuck to their principles, even though they never managed to win as many trophies as some of the big clubs.

I truly believe had we beat Chelsea in the Quarters we would have beat Barca in the Semis and be the team facing the Mancs in the final.

      Platini is a 1st class ******.
      We come not to play.

Hopefully the referee favours Barcelona for moral reasons.

But what a great player he was. He's a purist, like most of these great attacking players like him, Cruyff also. They always favour sentimentality over calculation and we shouldn't be too surprised at what they say.

Cruyff has always played the game without 'systematizing' his teams, favouring the all out attack. I remember one of his Barca teams he built played something like 2-4-4 and they were bloody good at what they did. They didn't win back to back European championships but they produced absolutely magnificent football, and to be fair to them, with the players they had, they couldn't play any other way.

Credit has to be given to some, and Cruyff deserves a lot of respect. As for Platini, apart from his great playing career, he just chose to become a politician thereafter and this plays against him.

He needs to learn to shut his mouth. If the ref gives Barcelona any big decision in the final the Mancs are going to cry foul play and blame Uefa

                I'm actually hoping for that.

He was a good player, now he's head honcho of UEFA such a role requires an unbiased view, his blinkered hatred of England/English clubs is very grating.

Why doesn't he do anything to stop the racist and violent thugs in Spain/Italy and Eastern Europe?

I can see where he's going. He's trying to democratize football, break big club's economic stronghold and develop the grass roots. If more and more clubs can have their say and happen to be more competitive, that could only enhance the game.

It's not his job to stop the racist thugs from Italy and Spain, it's those countries FA who should be responsible for that. He could only issue rules and fines for clubs breaching them, especially if the security of fans, who are stakeholders of the sport, are put at risk.

agreedit's good for footbal to have 4 clubs from england, spain, germany, 2 or 3 from france, holland, portugal, scotland,.. who can win the CL, not just 3 clubs from england and 1 from spain capable of doing that.

it has to be a level playing field, and right now, not all clubs have the same conditions for attracting players and buildnig stadia etc. bayern for example can't go into dept.

and i tell you what, coming from a small footballing nation i'd love to see one of our clubs having a go with the big boys, and not look out of depth(and that has acually happned in 99/00 season with maribor).

having a more "good" clubs is a good thing, and i think with the Europa League they're on the right track.

so if platini favoures a team doing things they way he thinks things should be done, i for one don't hold it against him

and it's the mancs so who cares

The headline says it all. Platini is a cat.

And we all know their mewling is irritating and nonsensical.
                        .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.
