    Antonio Valencia

Mystery third club in for Valencia

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has confirmed that a third, as yet unnamed club has entered the race to sign Antonio Valencia.

The Ecuador international is poised to leave The Latics this summer after outgrowing his surroundings and Whelan recently confirmed that United had been in talks as they seek a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo.

Real, who have agreed a world record £80 million transfer fee for Ronaldo, are long-term admirers of Valencia and are also believed to have made an offer in the region of £17 million.

It was expected that Valencia would be heading to either Old Trafford or the Bernabeu but Whelan has now stated that a third club has requested talks with the player and his agent.

Liverpool have been linked with the player in the past and Rafa Benitez is expected to reinforce his wide options this summer.

Valencia initially joined Wigan on loan from Villarreal following the 2006 World Cup when he was on the shortlist to be named young player of the tournament.

A permanent deal was completed in January 2008 and The Latics are now on the brink of making a huge profit on the 23-year-old winger

If we were the third club, would you want him??

If we needed a RW yes.

But Rafa is happy with Kuyt and I think he sees our priority as LW. Valencia is no Ronaldo and never will be, but he is a very good player and would be a fantastic signing for any club.

If we had money to burn I'd be in for him as an alternative to Kuyt and get them two to fight it out.

Really? I rate the guy myself. Big, strong and fast is a good start. And his crossing ability and shooting aint bad either. When we beat Wigan 3-2 he was MOTM and gave our LB a torrid time (though it may have only been Dossena ). He did the cross for THAT Zaki goal if I remember correctly.

When Wigan were in form he was the one who stood out as the guy who could make things happen. I do however think he relys too much on his pace though.

Yeah I dont rate him at all mate. He's got good physical attributes like you mentioned but he seems like he just doesnt really know how to score goals, and for a winger at that price it'd be a huge concern for me.

Obviously I dont expect him to get 20 a season for Wigan, but 7 goals in 78 league games aint to hot. And though it could improve at a bigger club with more possesion etc, i'd worry he'd be another Pennant and he is just clueless when it comes to scoring goals (though not quite as clueless as Pennant was)

I can see why you're concerned with figures that low. Rafa has personally spoke about wanting goals from wide men and I see that as the reason Pennant was bombed out.

Valencia has a spectacular strike on him too so he really should do better.

I'd describe him as decent but not much more.

And i'd describe his price tag as hilarious and nonsensical.

Same here. He is fairly good player but to put him in the price range of 17 mill seems overly "optimistic".

I would not mind seeing ManU shelling out "Ronaldo" funds on players like him

£17m goes beyond the usual 'asking for more than a player is worth'...it's more like an April Fool's gag.
