Downing isn't actually a bad player, as Dave stated earlier. He's a good player and should do well at Villa.

Agreed. I'm just not sure how much Young has produced in the Prem, sure he's a really good player i just think Silva has the potential to be better and certainly a player who's more suited to our style of play.Originally posted by Craig_H View PostWell Young has produced in the PL, Silva hasnt. There's the risk of adapting with Silva.

Again true and with every transfer there's a certain element of risk as there would be with signing Young.'Religion is killing each other over who has the best imaginary friend'

There is no problem with that - it means we don't waste any money on himOriginally posted by dww View PostGiven that we never know the real financial details of any transfer I'll ignore the price part but I really don't see what people's problem is with this signing for Villa.
Downing is a good player, who is PL experienced, takes a good freekick and could possibly play in all the positions that Barry covered. I know he hasn't played (much) in the centre of midfield but in many ways his games seems more suited to that role in a 4-3-3 than it does him playing as a genuine winger. He has a decent range of passing and is decent in the tackle. It is generally agreed that both Capello and Rafa quite rate him. What is O'Neill supposed to do start making bids for Silva, try to make Villa the new Spurs of pointlessly over ambitious transfer raid fame?
Downing may not be a player of the very top quality but he is more than good enough for a team that competes in/for Europe.
He is a decent player, but he won't take Villa any steps forward.

Aye. There was an element of risk in signing Torres too. He'd never played in the PL. Sometimes you've gotta take these risks to get the best players. I agree with your stance on Silva. Also Young went horribly off the boil last term and could be another Pennant.Originally posted by Ben_Itez View PostAgreed. I'd be amazed if he did a Pennant. I think Young will progress into a top, top player.Originally posted by ShaggyAlonso View PostAye. There was an element of risk in signing Torres too. I don't.Originally posted by Rich View PostI'd be amazed if he did a Pennant. I think Young will progress into a top, top player.
I think someone's mentioned it already, but he showed more than a touch of the Pennants in that game at Old Trafford last season. United were there for the taking and three or four times Villa had them on the break with Young on the ball. Every time he choked and totally wasted the opportunity...and it ****ing infuriated me. I don't think he'll ever become a genuinely top class player. Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’
