I know it looks bad; but you can tell from his outstreched/pointed toes that it was a genuine attempt to get the ball.

could have quite easily been worse for Ronaldo.
I had a tackle like that on me in February of this year.. unfortunately the guy was sprinting at me, he dived in.. hit me in the same place.. Dislocated my knee cap, and damaged my knee cartilage, i haven't played football in 5 months, and missed two finals.. and only starting to play again now.
