Bendtner changes squad no to 52

striker Nicklas Bendtner has got a new squad number this season, and whilst changing squad numbers is not unusual, players usually move higher up the order, with first team players usually preferring numbers from 1 to 11.

However, Bendtner has ditched his former squad number for one that's lower down the pecking order, and will wear the number 52 for the next season. Exactly why he's chosen that particular number is a mystery, though the Dane hints that it's down to personal reasons.

It could be that 5 x 2 equals 10, which is actually one of the most coveted numbers amongst attackers in a team, or 5 + 2 equals 7, which is a number coveted by wingers, something that Bendtner is not. Or maybe he wants to score 52 goals this season, or hit the post 52 times, or miss the target 52 times.

Bendtner explained: "The new season's almost here, and along with the rest of the players I'm really excited and believe it can be a really special one for everyone associated with the club.

"Before it starts I wanted to change my squad number from 26 which I've obviously had for a number of seasons now. I chose to move to 52 because it's a special number to me personally, and I hope that it brings me good luck for the new season.

"I appreciate that a good number of fans have bought their kits for 2009/10 already with names and numbers printed up so I'd like to personally cover the cost of replacing anyone's shirt that has my previous number.

"It means a lot to see supporters wearing your name and number, and I want to ensure people aren't inconvenienced by the change."

The offer does come with a caveat however. You must have purchased the kit from the club itself to be eligible for it. It's not clear what you could do if you had bought the kit from a distributor, except maybe keep it ...

    Won't cost him much
Well, here we are in a room with two manky hookers and a racist dwarf. I think I'm heading home.

Where does it say that? Who reckons it'll be £10k?

That was the figure mentioned on the BBC gossip column on teletext, not sure what the original source was.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

              Ah i see.

£10k isnt much actually. If you take a shirt at £40, £10k would only be 250 shirts

£10k at about £50 a shirt means there are ~200 Arsenal fans with Bentner shirts

what a strange thing to do, you'd have thought when Wenger was sorting out the team numbers at the start of the season Bendtner would have piped up then?

However, Bendtner's decision to change number has not got off to the best start as he faces a £10,000 bill from Arsenal after offering to reimburse fans who bought replica shirts bearing his old number.

Perhaps he just wanted to pay homage to the music of the B52's?

It's probably some stupid thing about 52 being double 26 and him thinking he's now 'twice as good' a player.

To be fair - that's a pretty decent thing for him to do!

Good shout, double the number (of goals he hopes)

He should pay them all a commision for wearing his name on their backs too

So if it works next year it'll be 'Bentner 104'
