Player struck by lightning has leg amputated

COPENHAGEN - Danish footballer Jonathan Richter has had the lower part of his left leg amputated after he was struck by lightning during a match six weeks ago.
The family of the 24-year-old midfielder from FC Nordsjaelland said in a statement on Tuesday that his condition was improving and he would soon be moved from the intensive care unit of a Copenhagen hospital.
Richter was struck during a friendly against FC Hvidovre on July 20 and was in an induced coma for 10 days. Richter was said to have been struck directly in either the chest or head area. Such was its power, up to six other footballers on the pitch were said to have been knocked over at the time this hit!

Sad that his career has been ended by such a freak accident.

How unlucky is that, a crying shame.

Lucky also in that he didn't die.
            We come not to play.

The referee should have stopped the game as soon as they heard the first clap of thunder. A ref once told me that's what they are supposed to do.
              .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

sometimes it just comes out of the blue though, which I believe is the case here.

We have heard a lot about Richter and he was close to death for quite a while, so he is actually lucky to "just" loose a leg - but a sad way to end his career.

Sure, it can happen but it's rare.

I mentioned it in case anyone here is ever playing while a thunderstorm is approaching.

Fair point, will take some getting used too for the lad, but he will eventually also see it that way i'm sure.

Seems to be a bad week for injuries of the horrific nature...you've got this poor fellow, the bloke mentioned in another thread with the nasty leg break, and now the match between Gateshead and Hayes & Reading was abandoned after a 40 minute delay due to Martin Brittain substaining a double fracture of the leg...with the leg break issue, are shin pads becoming weaker as they are made lighter, or did these things happen a lot back in the earlier years?
