Premier League - Four-match ban and fine for Ferguson
        PA Sport - Thu, 12 Nov 13:52:00 2009

Alex Ferguson has been handed a four-match touchline ban for his comments about referee Alan Wiley after Manchester United's 2-2 draw against Sunderland.

Two of the matches will be suspended until the end of next season, while United boss Ferguson was also given a £20,000 fine by an FA regularity commission for suggesting Wiley was "just wasn't fit enough" to officiate in the Premier League after last month's game.

Peter Griffiths QC, who chaired the commission, said: "Each member of the commission recognised Sir Alex Ferguson's achievements and stature within the game.

"Having said that, it was made clear to Sir Alex that with such stature comes increased responsibilities.

"The commission considered his admitted remarks, in the context in which they were made, were not just improper but were grossly improper and wholly inappropriate.

"He should never have said what he did say."

The additional two-match ban will be activated if Ferguson is found guilty of a similar offence before the end of next season.

Ferguson had admitted the charge of improper conduct and apologised to Wiley in the wake of strong opinion his comments had served to undermine the FA's 'Respect' campaign.

However, the Scot maintained his assertion that the fitness of referees in the Premier League remained an issue to be discussed. "I apologise to Mr Wiley for any personal embarrassment that my remarks may have caused and to the FA for going public with my views," Ferguson said at the time via the club's website.

"My only intention in speaking publicly was to highlight what I believe to be a serious and important issue in the game, namely that the fitness levels of referees must match the ever-increasing demands of the modern game, which I hope will now be properly addressed through the appropriate formal channels."

The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

It should be a complete stadium ban.

That's disgraceful, it's admitting that the more successful and high profile people in football get an easier ride than anyone else

We've know it for a while, but to actually say it!

                        I liked this bit:

This is the club boss who could supply more than half of England's starting XI in Ben Foster, Wes Brown, Rio Ferdinand, Michael Carrick, Owen Hargreaves and Rooney, let alone cultivating Ravel Morrison as a potential gem for 2014.

That is an intriguing selection of players - but what is really amusing is the claim of a youngster for 2014 who obviously has not even got near the first XI. Surely Freddy Adu and Tonton Zola Makoko have taught people something by now.

You could potentially make the same arguement for and kid in the reserves or academy. But wouldn't

Very kind of the FA to give him a Carling Cup game instead of a league match. Absolute ****ing joke, it just gets worse and worse.

Sir Alex Ferguson will be in the dugout for Manchester United's Premier League clash with Everton on Saturday despite been hit with a two-match suspension.

United's boss was punished for comments on referee Alan Wiley's fitness after a 2-2 draw with Sunderland in October.

But the Football Association said that the ban does not start until 14 days after last week's disciplinary hearing.

Ferguson will sit in the stands at Portsmouth on 28 November and again for the Carling Cup tie with Tottenham.

The FA handed the 67-year-old a four-game ban, with two of those suspended until the end of the 2010/11 season, a £20,000 fine and warned him about his future conduct.

Ferguson made disparaging remarks about Wiley's fitness after his side were held to a draw at home by the Black Cats on 3 October.

Ferguson said at the time: "The pace of the game demanded a referee who was fit. He was not fit."

He later said he was sorry for any personal embarrassment caused to Wiley, claiming the comments were to highlight "what I believe to be a serious and important issue in the game".

The suspended sanction will be automatically activated should he be found guilty of a similar charge before the end of the 2010/11 season on top of any penalty imposed for that offence.

Ferguson has a history of improper conduct charges for incidents involving referees.

In the 2007/08 season he was given a two-match touchline ban and fined £5,000 for a rant at referee Mark Clattenburg during a match at Bolton.

And during the last campaign he was banned for two games and fined £10,000 after remonstrating with referee Mike Dean after a match against Hull.
