    English football rivalries

was discussing football rivalries with some friends after the liverpool scum game and we came to the conclusion (now i am living in on the southcoast) that the most hatred between two football teams is definitely southampton and portsmouth,
because they have a deep rooted hatred of each other that goes beyond football, unlike many clubs, it goes back to a dock strike many years a go, they wont even shop in there rivals town and in some cases wont employ people who show there allegiance to the club from the opposing city.

You could easily be talking about West Ham - Mill Wall

I agree with you to an extent, but this last bit is an exaggeration

To be fair, the Liverpool - Manchester rivally came from outside of football. The rivally is the reason there is the Manchester Ship Canal. Poor old Manchester was getting its skimpies twisted over all the trade Liverpool got.

Most of the rivalries between cities seem to come out of some earlier dispute.

Pompey refer to them as the scum/scummers.

I also think the Midlands should be in that mix.

                  Wolves v West Brom
                  Villa v B/Ham

Being a 'suvannah' I would go for the 'Ammers v Millwall.

Burnley - Blackburn seemed quite a fierce rivalry.

Burnley and Blackburn is a hatred...its a huge Police operation when they play. But you try going to Blackburn in a Burnley shirt (or vice versa) and I guarantee you would get lots of grief and probably physical violence . Blackburn fans sing anti-Burnley songs even when they are not playing in the same league - every time I have been there to watch us play them they are singing their anti-Burnley songs

This is half English, but the Chester - Wrexham games are always a bit mental. It is definitely made a lot worse due to the Nationalism element, been some crazy riots over the years.

                              Woking vs Aldershot

Actually the biggest ruck I've ever seen was a couple of years ago between Aldershot and Oxford. I hate Aldershot - it's a 2 minute drive from here, but I saw the Oxford fans get off the train at probably 10am, already off their tits, ready to cause carnage from the word go. There were some horrible, horrible scenes that evening.
