    Terry injured before Brazil game

BBC Sport, Friday, 13 November 2009

    International friendly: Brazil v England
Venue: Khalifa International Stadium, Doha Date: Saturday, 14 November Kick-off: 1700 GMT
Coverage: Live on BBC Radio 5 live and online, with text commentary on BBC Sport website and mobile phones. Live on ITV1

England captain John Terry could miss Saturday's friendly against Brazil in Qatar with an ankle injury.

England boss Fabio Capello remains confident the 28-year-old will be fit, but vowed not to take any risks with the Chelsea defender.

If Terry is absent, Manchester United's Wayne Rooney will captain the side.

Rooney, Terry and Gareth Barry are the only first-team regulars remaining in Capello's squad for the game at the Khalifa International Stadium.

England may be especially careful with Terry after his Chelsea team-mate Frank Lampard flew home on Thursday with a thigh injury.

The midfielder will be out for three weeks with a torn muscle.

But Capello said of Terry: "He was running on his own and twisted his ankle. I am confident he will be fit for Saturday.

"The doctors think so but I won't take a risk. If he is not fit, he will not play."

Liverpool right-back Glen Johnson withdrew from the squad on Tuesday, joining first-team regulars Rio Ferdinand, Steven Gerrard, Ashley Cole, David James, Theo Walcott and Emile Heskey on the sidelines.

Squad members David Beckham, Aaron Lennon and Carlton Cole are also missing.

In their absence, the likes of Wes Brown, Michael Carrick and James Milner could get a chance to shine for England.

Aston Villa's Stephen Warnock and Wayne Bridge of Manchester City are vying to replace Cole at left-back.

Barry, speaking to the media in place of Terry on Friday, said England could draw on their performance against Germany in a friendly a year ago when a makeshift side won 2-1 in Berlin.

"It is a disappointment the amount of injuries we have had at one time," he said.

"When you are playing the best team in the world, you want your strongest team out there against them.

"But at least it will give other people the opportunity to prove what they can do at this level.

"We played against Germany when a lot of senior people were missing and produced one of our best performances under Fabio Capello."

Brazil, by contrast, are almost at full strength, although manager Dunga has left out AC Milan pair Ronaldinho and Alexandre Pato.

In Pato's place, Porto striker Hulk has been given his first call-up.

Manchester City forward Robinho is also with the squad, although he will not feature on Saturday.

The £32.5m signing has not played for his club for over two months because of an ankle injury, and City boss Mark Hughes was adamant the forward should not take part in Saturday's game.

"We felt he would benefit from having training sessions with the quality of the Brazil squad," Hughes told BBC Sport.

"But it was only agreed to on the understanding that he takes no part in the games."

The friendly, to be staged at the 50,000-capacity Khalifa International Stadium, is part of a deal struck when Brazil agreed to be England's first opponents at the new Wembley in 2007.

For Capello, it represents a precious chance to assess his squad, with only one more friendly - on 3 March - scheduled before he selects his 23 players for the World Cup.

Qatar will use the game to promote their bid to host the 2022 World Cup.

    England squad

Goalkeepers: Ben Foster (Manchester United), Robert Green (West Ham), Joe Hart (Manchester City).

Defenders: Wayne Bridge (Manchester City), Wes Brown (Manchester United), Gary Cahill (Bolton), Joleon Lescott (Manchester City), John Terry (Chelsea), Matthew Upson (West Ham), Stephen Warnock (Aston Villa).

Midfielders: Gareth Barry (Manchester City), Michael Carrick (Manchester United), Tom Huddlestone, Jermaine Jenas (both Tottenham), James Milner (Aston Villa), Shaun Wright-Phillips (Manchester City), Ashley Young (Aston Villa).

Strikers: Darren Bent (Sunderland), Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe (both Tottenham), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United)

Not surprised....Wales could have a good run in a couple of years, talented young players.

Interesting team, I know there are alot of injuries but that's vertually a second 11, I'd be suprised if (injuries aside) more than two of todays starting 11 start in the first world cup game
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

poor team for us today, defo a 2nd 11 and not a true representation of the starting 11 for the world cup. Capello is giving some 2nd chance people...an opportunity to show they should be going to SA
                        Cheers

Nil nil, but none of the England lot have impressed. Only Jenas has looked half decent. Poor old Darren Bent has not had a sniff, Foster looked wayward early on before a couple of simple saves. Upson looks all at sea and Lescott not much better. Wes Brown is getting regularly embarrassed by Nilmar on the right, whilst Milner and SWP have looked average.

Wayne Bridge has had nothing to do, Barry looks average when in possession whilst Rooney should be looking for better options than thirty yard shots.

With that all said, Brazil also look average. Only Nilmar on their left and Kaka through the middle have offered anything. They look exactly like they have all year, a counter attacking team that is also dangerous at set pieces. If England continue to sit deep and avoid individual errors Brazil will offer nothing.

I think a full strength England team could have made a big statement and shown Brazil for what they really are - A team lacking in invention and based more on keeping their shape than playing great football to carve open teams.
