the point he was making was, that given and the rest of the defenders ran straight to the ref in trying to make a point, he shoudn't have blown for the goal straight away but should have consulted his assistant(s), and then make the decision.Originally posted by DannyMan2006 View PostI didn't see the assistant ref flag, so he obviously either saw nothing or bottled it.

Had the assistant flagged then of course he should delay and consult. But he did not. This to me means that the assistant ref either saw nothing, or bottled it. So the referee speaking to him would have been pointless.
It would be like asking the ref to consult with the assistant after every goal. The referee saw nothing wrong, and the assistant saw nothing wrong, which means no need to consult.Forwards.......

I'm not sure it is - if there is a big controversy going across to ask the assistant at least gives the impression of having all the information and might calm players down. It's also possible that the assistant might have seen something and not been sure and the referee too - hence neither giving anything but if they both agree then that might change the decision. Also in the event of the assistant bottling it the referee might talk him round. I really don't see any obvious downside to the referee taking a bit of a time out on big goal deciding decisions.Originally posted by DannyMan2006 View PostWhy?

That said you have to accept on occasion that officials will miss things and sometimes they will have a baring on the game."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

), but in this case I don't think it would have helped as there was also an offside which the assistant didn't spot. As the assistant didn't flag you would have to assume he didn't see anything.
As for Henry potentially being punished I think that sets a dangerous precident. The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

I'm just going to make one point - he handled it twice. The first was instinctive but the second touch was almost basketball like and was definitely a concious decision. It wasn't just pure instinct. It was calculated cheating.
As a proud Irishman Henry has gone to the top of my list of most hated players.
Having said that there's been too much hoo haa about this already and some of the actions of the Football Association of Ireland have been embarassing. France are going to the World Cup and we're not. Time to move on and hope they get knocked out in the group stages.A humble guy with healthy desire.
