Markus Babbel was yesterday sacked as manager of German Bundesliga side VfB Stuttgart. Stuttgart finished an impressive third last season, but find themselves lying in 16 place with only 2 wins in 15 matches.
Babbel, who made 42 appearances for Liverpool, was sacked after Stuttgart could only manage a 1-1 draw with struggling Bochum. However, the Stuttgart fans had already started to turn on the team and in particular Babbel.
Before Sunday's match, the Stuttgart team bus was greeted by angry supporters and the team subjected to taunts during the game. Babbel was heavily critical of the crowd's behavior, telling the Süddeutsche Zeitung newspaper that the world had "learnt nothing" from the tragic death of Robert Enke.
"Even those who are described as millionaire footballers do not deserve…all this hatred.
"Saturday there were two players on the field that came from the youth team, and were afraid. The blame lies with the fans, " Babbel added.
However, Stuttgart still stand a chance of qualifying for the knock-out stages of the Champions League, should they beat Romanians Unirea Urziceni this week.
