Preston man arrested after football fan dies

A 25-year-old man from Preston has been arrested after a football fan died in hospital following an incident at Blackburn Rovers' game against Stoke.

The Rovers supporter, a 30-year-old man, was found collapsed and unconscious with a head injury at the start of the second half of the Premier League match between the two clubs at the Britannia Stadium in Stoke on Saturday.

Police said he was found in the concourse area of the south SEAT stand, where the 1,300 travelling Rovers fans were housed, at just after 4pm.

He was initially treated for a head injury and a heart attack by ambulance staff before being taken to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire, where he died at just before 2am on Sunday.

Staffordshire Police say he is from Lancashire but have yet to formally identify him.

A man from Preston was arrested by Staffordshire police yesterday following the incident.

Match commander Chief Inspector Adrian Roberts said: "At the moment he is assisting us with our inquiries."

He said the concourse area where the man had been found has been "contained and preserved" to allow an investigation to be carried out.

Sgt Matthew Bennion, of Staffordshire Police, said: "It is with regret that we can now inform you that the 30-year-old man died just before 2am on Sunday. His family are aware and our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the family at this time.

"A formal identification has yet to take place. A 25-year-old male from the Preston area remains in police custody and is helping police with their injuries. The circumstances are being fully investigated."

Police said the incident was confined to the Blackburn Rovers supporters' section of the ground and no Stoke fans were involved.

A statement on Stoke City's website said Chief Insp Roberts had confirmed the man suffered a "head trauma" in the incident which was confined to the visitors' section of the SEAT stand.

Blackburn Rovers have also notified supporters of the incident on their official website.

A spokesman for Lancashire police said the force would be assisting with any "community issues" in Lancashire following the incident, but Staffordshire police are conducting the investigation.

You'd think no matter how bad it gets and 3-0 at Stoke is pretty damn bad, you still wouldn't be fighting with your own fans.

If anyone saw the news of a man in a critical condition in our away end at the game today, he didn't collapse or die of old age or anything. From half time on in that concourse at Stoke there was essentially a riot, a huge fight between our own fans.

Anyone who has been to Stoke knows how small the concourse is down there, and with hundreds crammed in there at half time, with the bar shut and the team ****, tempers were a bit frayed to begin with.

No idea how it started, don't really want to know to be honest. First it was just bottles and anything anyone could find being thrown around, with people trying to get back to seats but hardly being able to move.

Then.. well, some utter moron, who I hope is found, took one of the big metal bins and simply started throwing it.

The man in a critcal conidtion was hit in the head with it. He was pretty much dead on the ground, they've brought him round in hospital, just about.

We were kept on the ground, and they ended up letting us off via the pitch.

Apparently, it would seem this is what happens when us and Burnley get in the same division. Its sickening. Our away attendances, and trouble away from home, have both gone up this year, coming to the fore front today. Why? Becuase these idiots just want Burnley tickets to go and do the same there.

I honestly can't see myself travelling away with Blackburn again, having been able to count on one hand the games ive missed over the last few years.

tragic. apparently, well not apparently as several fans have video evidence, the idiots amongst our supporters thought it would be a good idea to throw full bottles around, which was then followed by trashing the whole concourse. from here, they ripped bins from the wall, threw them up in the air and some guy has taken a full bin to the face, fallen, cracked his head and hit the floor. he apparently died in the concourse, but some fan managed to revive him with cpr, and then the whole concourse was sealed off whilst he was taken to hospital. if any fans needed the toilet, they had to get an escort from our section to the nearest stoke section. we then had to leave by walking pitchside, premusably so they can preserve what could become a crime scene.

today was horrible in terms of our supporters. two guys behind me repeatedly called any black player 'jungle boy', 'elephant washer' or 'soap dodger', swore at 60+ old men who asked them to sit down, and then began to snap their seats.

No action over Blackburn Rovers fan death at Stoke City

No further action is to be taken over the death of a 30-year-old Blackburn Rovers fan at Stoke City's Britannia Stadium last month, police say.

John Taylor was found unconscious in the south stand concourse, being used by visiting fans, during Stoke City's match against Blackburn on 6 February.

Mr Taylor, from Darwen in Lancashire, died in hospital from a head injury.

The Crown Prosecution Service said no further action would be taken against a man, 25, arrested at the time.

The man, from Preston, was arrested after the incident and later released on bail, police said at the time.

Initial reports suggested Mr Taylor may have been hit on the head with a bin.

Staffordshire Police said it had handed a file to the CPS but now the matter would not be taken any further.

Mr Taylor's family paid tribute to him last month, describing him as a "perfect and brilliant dad".

They said he was a life-long Blackburn Rovers fan and "lived for his weekends, going to football".
