I agree.Originally posted by Shaggy View PostI don't understand why all the talk suggests Reina will go to Barca for about £10m and the likes of Begovic will cost us £15m. WTF?
The price of keepers are a lot less than outfield players, but why the hell would Begovic be worth 50% more than Reina?!

That isn't necessarily true, he's only 30 he's probably got another 7 or 8 years at the top.Originally posted by Red_Polo View PostI agree the gap is not favourable, but I wouldn't expect to replace him for less. Pepe will have little resale value to whoever buys him.The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

True, but they could get 3 good years out of him and still sell him for a decent fee at age 33, that would only be like buying an outfield player at ~30, and top 30 year olds still go for decent fees.Originally posted by Red_Polo View PostNot being retired and having a good resale value are not the same thing though
And lets face it if we only get £10m for him now, that's not a huge amount for a player who could be at the top for 7-8 more years, even if they sell him on in 3 years time they could get half of that back at least. The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Yeah but he's got resale value now. It's the buying club's problem really. You don't get money off a new car because it's going to be worth a lot less when you sell it three years later.Originally posted by Red_Polo View PostNot being retired and having a good resale value are not the same thing though
.
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.
May the Lord bless this post.

If other cars were of similar quality but kept their value after 3 years, clearly they would cost more. So it's a silly analogy
My point is, I don't expect us to get a replacement we're happy with for less than we get for Reina, since unless the replacement were of significantly inferior quality the difference in resale potential ought account for the rest of the valuation.Like blood on iron

Of course it's primarily about quality. Resale value is a minor component really, especially when you consider that, sadly, moving from LFC to Barcelona would be a step up for him.
But if the figures are to be believed then I'd agree your explanation for the disparity holds water. It just shouldn't IMO.
