SPL to lose a CL place

And they think they are good enough for the PL

    ----------------------------------------------

Scotland will lose one of their two Champions League places from the season after next, the SPL have confirmed.

This week's Europa League results for Belgian clubs saw them overtake Scotland into 15th spot in UEFA's co-efficient ranking table.

A fall to 16th also means the 2010-11 SPL champions will not qualify automatically for the following season's Champions League group stage.
Blow: Either Rangers or Celtic will miss out on qualifying for the Champions League

They will instead have to navigate three qualifying rounds, though all matches will be against champions from smaller European nations rather than runners-up or third- and fourth-placed sides from larger countries.
But the loss of a Champions League spot is potentially a huge blow to the Old Firm, who published their half-yearly accounts this week in which the difference between reaching the group stage and failing to do so was laid bare.

Next season will see both the SPL winners and runners-up in the Champions League, with the runners-up facing two qualifying rounds, the second of which could be against one of the giants of the European game.
An SPL spokesman said: 'Our clubs are sorted for next season. It's for the season after that that Belgium are now above us.'

    The SPL is a joke.

Rangers and Celtic in their current guise would both struggle in the Championship never mind the Premier league.

It's not surprising really, it's rare that both Celtic and Rangers make it through to the group stages of the Champions League in the same season, and haven't they only made it through the group stages once each.

The other Scottish clubs also have very poor records in the Europa League

It wasnt that long ago that the SPL could boast players like Laudrup and Gascoigne.

What happened then, that isnt happening now, to enable the league to afford such lucrative salaries?

Obviously there's less money there now, but why has it decreased so much between that era and today? The money doesnt just disappear overnight.

I would NEVER let them join any of our leagues, Vauxhall Conference included.

I'm not sure what happened to the SPL TV rights, Setanta had them, but I seem to recall the Setanta deal was big compared to what they had previously. I know after Setanta collapsed some of the clubs were in financial trouble. But I don't know what happened before/after Setanta

ESPN now shows SPL, along with Sky.

Their TV deal wont have risen at the same rate as ours yet players wages across the board have gone through the roof, so a greater percentage of turnover has to be spent on wages, or you can only afford worse players.

Either way its TV money that dictates the state of play for them - they desperately need to play in a more glamorous league then their large support can kick in, they can grab bigger slices of TV money, and they'll earn greater sums to fund buying better players.

To be fair the quality of the PL seems to be trying to sink to meet them half way.

its great to see the old firm dying a slow death at the moment. hopefully with the hibees having no debt at all and the best young players in scotland if not some of the most promising in th uk, they can overtake in the long term and be the dominant force in scottish football.
People who think there's no good way to die have obviously never heard the phrase 'Drug-fuelled-sex-heart-attack'.
