    Pienaar overdoes the celebrations

Everton FC's midfielder Steven Pienaar has been charged with drink driving after being stopped in Liverpool city centre.

The 27-year-old was arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning and was also charged with failure to comply with a traffic sign.

A Merseyside Police spokeswoman refused to say exactly where he was stopped.

He is due to appear before Liverpool Magistrates on 9 March. His team beat Manchester United 3-1 the day before.

The South African was brought to Goodison Park on loan in the summer of 2007.

He was signed for £2.05m after he permanently left his former club, Dortmund in April 2008.

Everton FC has not yet commented on the charges.

Why does ANY Premiership footballer need to drink-drive? Does their £50k a week not leave them enough to pay a taxi driver or a private chauffeur?

I agree entirely, which makes this all the more depressing, as I had Didi down as one of the more sensible and intelligent footballers. Doing it and then trying to get off on a technicality is pretty low.

When PC Connolly asked Hamann whether he was carrying any sharp instruments, the star joked that he had a knife, the court heard.

"Yes, a knife, which is now in my car," said the footballer.

The footballer said he found it difficult to hold his bladder at the police station.

"Everyone knows how hard it is to stop when you need a wee," he said.
I know I shouldn't laugh but I just have this image of Didi unleashing a stream of piss in front of the Duty Sergeant..

He has no regular income since being released from Manchester City, but relies on his "significant" savings and occasional coaching for his former club, Liverpool, the court heard.

Was probably slightly over. Although still, if your not sure it's not worth chancing it.
