If Spain played England, and the whole of the country would be creaming about Rooney (ARISE SIR WAYNE!), comparing him favourably to Torres etc etc, would you honestly be able to bring yourself to want England - with Terry, Ferdinand, Rooney, Lampard and co) - to beat Nando's Spain? I know Gerrard plays for them too but **** that...he's stuck out on the left acting as the sacrificial lamb for Thuper Fwank. **** that. Come on Spain

The question that really should be asked is why do so many English not want or not care about their country winning the World Cup? Is it purely down to a hatred of Terry/Rooney et al? You've got a good chance this year, probably the third or fourth best side in the tournament on paper.

If Thierry Henry had not been such a cheating **** the entire population of Ireland would be hyperventilating with excitement right now. Well, the enitr population minus one contrary individual named R. Keane.

Sure, some of your players are royal cunts, but they're still your royal cunts.

I'm sure I've said on here many times, growing up as a kid I was extremely fond of England and have some great memories. Going to bed early to get up for the late night games of Mexico 86, crying with Gazza in 1990...I loved them.

That steadily eroded after Euro 96 (which I thought was great). I'm not sure why it is. For me it was just a natural process whereby I now find myself having no affection for the England team. Maybe I think England is for kids. I don't cheer or go mental when they score. And I think it's mainly because I loathe the majority of the players and I certainly detest the Ingerlund mentality and cringe at every song the fans sing, and the small town boys with Leyton Orient and Mansfield Town flags. I have no affinity with them. **** fans, **** songs, small time ****ers who just want their slice of the glory pie and to be able to sing songs about Gerrard et al as though they're their own. I guess it's a kind of snobbery really. I can't help it though. **** England.

Having said all that there's a good chance my stance will soften as the tournament comes round, but it'd never reach the point where I'm going to bed depressed after they've been knocked out on penalties.

I couldn't give a **** about England, only one team for me and my only concern is injuries to our players on international duty

Guess I lost interest after the appalling treatment of John Barnes by Engerlund Fans and the national press, remember thinking, **** them all I have nothing in common with any of the primative ****s

Given the choice I'd rather Liverpool won a throw in than England winning anything

We celebrate your national day for ****s sake, not ours.

I hate the English football team. Similar to what Shaggy has posted above, but with a bit more hate.

In fact, I just don't like nationalism, full stop. Be-it English, American, Balkan or whatever.
            Oh I don't know.

I don't think you have to be a nationalist to be a fan of your national team. I, for one, am definitely not a nationalist, and the selection of Slovenian national sport teams is probably the only thing that still binds me to this country, since everything else is going to **** or is already in one. Culture, politics, the incredible narrow-mindedness of the most of my fellow Slovenians - I don't know what I would do if I weren't a sports fan
But it's different here than in England - over there you have a selection of quality football events (maybe only in terms of atmosphere this year ) you can attend week in, week out, and I can understand how you can not give a **** about a team which maybe plays 10 matches per season, when you can watch LFC every week. Over here, the national team is the only opportunity to see some proper football, since the national league players offer tactical and technical abilities similar to those uf English u15 teams.
I've been visiting Slovenia's matches since I was 9 and I have always loved it so much, the atmosphere, the players, the fact that the team almost always exceeds the expectations of the fans - again, everything described is probably opposite to what you feel about English national team.

                That's fair enough.

I'm from Croatian descent, and when they first gained their independence from the 'oppressive serbs', it was great to see the red checks, and the birth of a nation. My parents do my head in though. If Croatia were represented in a knitting competition, they would probably get the flags out.

I was born in England, but have never felt particurly English.

I think I'm just reacting against those things.

That said, I prefer the Croatian team to the English one.
                Oh I don't know.

You could've been reading my mind there mate. Exactly the same for me, almost word for word.

It's not a conscious decision to me, i dont CHOOSE not to support england. I just dont feel it. When Liverpool score, i go mental. When england score, unless it's Stevie or Crouchy, i dont really feel any particular sense of happiness or anything. I just think something like 'oh, they scored'. That's it.

I'm not one who specifically WANTS england to lose. I'm just not fussed either way, although the media circus (re the discussion we were having last night about Keys, for example) just tips me over to the side of not wanting them to win the WC.

The only good thing about it would be the possibility of a national holiday, and the positive impact it'd have on the economy. That's all.

                    Interesting.

So, a lot of the In-ger-land brigade are supporters of lower league teams looking for their slice of the glory pie.

Do supporters of other big English teams feel the same way about the nation team?

The whole world celebrates our national day - more than we do. It's pretty low key over here, although it has become that bit more Americanised in recent years.

Does the media coverage have a lot to do with your attitude? The English media is ridiculous -if your boys win a match they are sure fire world cup winners and if they lose they're pond scum. Such polarising attitudes are sure to create antipathy amongst more sensible folk like yourself.

It's a common thing among Man Utd fans too, but less so from Arsenal or Chelsea fans. I wonder if it's a north/south thing. But then, i'm just outside London and i feel the same way as the Shagster.

It plays a part, certainly. The cringeworthy ****s dont do anything to encourage support for england. Embarrassing cunts, most of them.

Personally, i cant stand the sensationalisation that the english media thrives on.

I'm English so there isn't anyone else I can support.

Must admit that if any non LFC player scores I cheer through firmly gritted teeth, "yay we scored, but I still hate you, you Manc/ Chav cunt".

I support the team but only 1 of the individuals.

But the booing of other National Anthems, by our fans, makes me ashamed to be English. All this "let's celebrate our insular ignorance and bang on about the ****ing Empire" makes my blood boil.

Im welsh but I have no ****ing chance of cheering that lot on in a finals so I do find myself getting behind England, being a LFC fan I cant help myself although the lack of reds in the current squad does dampen my enthusiasm somewhat. If it came to it a Spain squad with Pepe, Arbeloa, Riera, Alonso, Torres plus Villa and other cracking footballers in it would get my support against a England squad with Stevie &, well Stevie. Plus the manc & chav cunts. Its a no brainer to be fair.
