Thing is though Celtic and Rangers are put in their place when they play in the Champions League. They always get knocked out in the group stage and almost always get spanked by a team like CSKA. IMO this shows just how strong they are which is not very but then again how can they test themselves playing against hat can only be described as league two teams.
you have to remember that they dont have alot of money up there apart from rangers and cletic. if they played in england celtic in particular would make a fortune and would definately compete.

it is a **** league but its all about the money
It's a common misconception that Scottish football has no money out with the Old Firm. The truth of the matter is that Scottish football, including the Old Firm, has no money.
Rangers haven't bought a single player in over 2 seasons. They are in dire financial straights. The are up for sale and are in effect being run by Lloyds bank.
Celtic will struggle to attract a manager of any calibre. Their fans are deluded if they think that they can attract the likes of Mark Hughes to manage their club. Celtic simply can't compete with any club in the English premiership in terms of transfer fees and wages. Look at the Owen Coyle situation prior to Celtic appointing Mowbray. The job was Coyle's if he wanted it yet he chose to remain first with Burnley and then move to Bolton when the oppertunity. Burnley and Bolton two club whom any Celtic fan would claim that their club is much much much bigger than.
However the demise of the Old Firm is not such a bad thing for Scottish Football. The mid to high price foreign imports are gone. More Scottish born players are getting a chance to shine.
