Chris Hughton has surprised a few people there. He's done an excellent job considering the mess they were in when they went down. Also unfashionable though it may be to give it I think Ashley deserves some credit for what he has done there since last summer. He's sunk a lot of money in and seems to have a reasonable vision for the future based on young players and sensible financial planning. It will be interesting to see how long that last in a division with Sunderland in it spending big money.

Yeah big credit to Hughton. He never ever overreacted or panicked. He just kept his cool and always looked quite calm, seems to have worked perfectly for him. Funny thing is I seen Mike Ashley out signing autographs before yesterdays game, just shows alot can change over a matter of months.

I think you also have to credit some of their foreign internationals who could have quite easily quit the club last summer but they stuck it out and got the club back into the top division. I really thought Collocini and Guttierez etc would have walked out on them, their commitment has been surprising.

All in all its worked out great for their fans as they actually got to see their team win alot of matches and turn St James Park back into a bit of a fortress this season. If they can build on their squad this summer then relegation might just turn out to be the best thing thats happened to Newcastle in a long time

Agree with all that. Promotion will only work out well for them if the fans don't instantly start clamouring for a Champions League place.

They have the best squad in that division by a mile.

Good news. Guaranteed 6 points next season for us.

i always thought that ashleys vision was the right one. however it was poorly executed with dennis wise etc

ironicly he has been a better owner in many ways than our muppets by clearing debt etc.

That's been downgraded to 1-4 points given the current situation at Liverpool

I was never sure what his vision was when he took over.

He seemed to want something like a continental structure of a director of football etc. but Wise had no interest in the club merely wanted an easy job and had no relationship with the manager/coach had a rubbish eye for a player. There was no real philosophy to their buys - such as getting in young players at cheap prices. They just seemed to build a squad at random with little concern for the long term needs of the club or the short/medium term ideas of the manager. Which was daft.

Since they went down he seems to have adopted a sensible philosophy - cut wages but starting with those least like to help in the promotion push. Bring through young players and keep to signings of an age where they will have resale value at least or may go up in value. Continuity in the coaching/management setup also seems to have helped but only giving Hughton a 18 month contract seems a worrying sign for the future.

I think an 18 month deal was about right, there was no guarantee of success under Hughton and the last thing they needed was another big compensation payout.

He should be rewarded with a new deal though.

But bear in mind that Ashleys had the club up for sale for a long period and obviously he's aware that a new owner would probably want his own management team therefore it would make no sense to give Hughton and long-term deal

i thought his vision was to clear the debt and to try to concentrate on bringing in young talented footballers. be it local or foreign.

having wise showed poor execution. also the constant changing in managers.

will be interesting to see how they do. obviously if not good enough hughton will be gone whether its his fault or not. i do worry that they will revert to type.
