The last of the proper football grounds

My home town club, Chesterfield FC - the 4th oldest football club in the world - will be moving to a new ground next season. Their ground - Saltergate (Recreation Ground) - has been in use since 1871 and is a real throwback. Such a throwback they used it in The Damned United.

I've been there hundreds of times, if not thousands, and I'm going to the last ever game against Bournemouth next month. This is a great little photo album, a bit of an eye-opener for anyone only used to Premier League football. This is what it's all about

A sad day but things move on I suppose. Attending Premiership games, in particular, is becoming quite a 'sterilised' experience with all seater stadiums and big gangs of corporate ticket holders. The best afternoons out are probably had by the season ticket holders of lower league clubs. Christ I feel like an old, miserable ******* today.

I absolutely despise all these new gounds, Reading, Leicester, Darlington, Sunderland, Doncaster, Cardiff, Southampton, Arsenal, Wembley, etc etc, all the same ****ty bowls of varying sizes.

Wembley especially is absolutely ****e for the money paid, all that cash for a bigger version of the Emirates. It looks "nice" and errr yeah thats it. Whoopee, what character!

I'd prefer Kenilworth Road to Sunderland. I go to football to support my team not for the "facilities" but thats obviously all its about these days sadly.

I suppose it is a bit sad but they're not my team and I'm not upset about it, just thought they were great shots of what looks a bygone era.

I reluctantly accept that a move is necessary but the new ground is depressing. A 10,000 capacity (ish) plastic, soulless little ground that looks just like all the others.

Depressing innit. All these identikit grounds are stripping away the character of the game. I used to go to Saltergate as a kid in the 80s and I'm so glad I caught the tail end of that era. Real football. ...when everybody behind the goal, all crammed together, was pissed up. The smell of stale ale and farts. **** corporate hospitality, gimme stale ale and farts every time.

                Reminds of Plough Lane.

I know people hated Wimbledon, but it was some acheivement for them to get to the old first division given their resources and facilities. It was ultimately the end of them as Plough Lane could not be developed. 15,000 capacity. Probably 50% standing.
                Oh I don't know.

I used to go to Deepdale years back. Wooden stands. Splinters in your arse. Crumbling terraces. Good days.

I've started going to Brentford recently which is roughly a 15 minute walk away. I've been told its the only ground with a pub on all 4 corners.

                    Sounds good
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.
