Fergie never had any intention of buying him from day 1. He knew he was getting value in that loan deal and it was enough. Ofcourse he wasn't to know that he would lose Ronaldo

I think they'd known for a good 12 months they were losing Ronaldo. I'm pretty sure Valdano claimed a week or so after they signed him that the deal had been agreed at the end of the previous summer
