PFA player of the year/Premier League team of the year

As Rooney was nominated in both categories how come he won the senior award and not the young player? Obviously I didn't want him to win it but it shows how farcical the PFA awards are.

Fletcher and Valencia in the team of the year

Wayne Rooney has been voted player of the year by his peers in the Professional Footballers' Association.

The Manchester United striker, who has scored 34 goals this season, beat off competition from Didier Drogba, Carlos Tevez and Cesc Fabregas.

Rooney, 24, said: "It's a great feeling to win because it's voted for by the players. It's a great honour and I'm really proud."

The young player of the year award was won by Aston Villa's James Milner.

Former Leeds and South Africa defender Lucas Radebe, 41, won the PFA Merit Award.

"Sport can change the world. Football has played such a big part in lifting my community," he said. "I'm very proud to get such a great award."

Rooney has blossomed at Old Trafford this season after the departures of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid and Carlos Tevez to Manchester City.

He has played in a more advanced role than in previous seasons and has added powerful heading ability to his overall game.

The England forward injured ankle ligaments in the first leg of United's Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich, and missed Saturday's 3-1 win over Tottenham with a groin injury picked up in training.

However, Rooney insisted he will be fit for the World Cup and indeed hopes to play in United's last league game, against Stoke.

"The groin will be fine for the World Cup, there are no worries about that," he said. "I'm hoping to play for United in the last game of the season.

"I remember coming here in 2005 and 2006 to win the young player of the year award. I saw the players winning the main one and it's something I've aimed for since."

The striker paid tribute to United boss Sir Alex Ferguson and the influence he has had on his career.

"Sir Alex is a great manager who has really brought me on as a player since I joined United. His hunger passes through to the players.

"It's great to see that he's pushing 70 and he hasn't changed a bit. I'm sure he'll be at United a long time yet."

Rooney was also nominated for the young player award but Milner, also 24, was voted winner.

A string of fine performances and an ability to play in a number of positions have made him a front-runner for a position in Fabio Capello's squad for the World Cup.

Milner said: "I've been moved into the middle and that suits me as it helps me influence the game a bit more. Sometimes when you are wide on the right you can't get yourself into it."

Premier League team of the year:
Joe Hart (Man City, Birmingham on loan), Branislav Ivanovic (Chelsea), Thomas Vermaelen (Arsenal), Richard Dunne (Aston Villa), Patrice Evra (Man Utd), Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal), James Milner (Aston Villa), Darren Fletcher (Man Utd), Antonio Valencia (Man Utd), Wayne Rooney (Man Utd), Didier Drogba (Chelsea).

He can't even force his way into the England team ahead of the OAP James, and the likes of Green etc. Reina is leading the running for the golden gloves thingy (yet again) and has easily been our best player this season.

Don't get me wrong I rate Hart highly but it should be Reina in that team. Bunch of ******s.

It's beginning to anger me ....Reina is head and shoulders the best in the league, has been again this year, yet for whatever reason still doesn't get the recognition.

To be fair I have noticed him getting more recognition by commentators, journalists etc this year, but it's still not enough dammit!

I agree that Reina is the better keeper but Hart has had an exceptional season and I don't begrudge him the recognition.

The only reason he is behind Green etc. in the England pecking order, I believe, is that Capello has a bias for older keepers (which may be a wise thing mentality wise in general but I'm far from convinced by the older English keepers).

That team of the year just shows what a ****ty and inconsistent season the players have had in the PL.

              Reina's ommission is absolutely shocking.

The whole thing is laughable, especially a 24 year old winning young player of the year.

The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Glad to see Milner got something, he has been class this season.

As for Reina, what does he have to do to get noticed? Sign for United?

reina is most defo the best keeper in the league but on this season alone, Brum would be absoloutely nowhere without hart.

He has been immense for them making a string of fine saves every game.

for me, although pepe is better, hart has been the more influencial keeper and therefore deserves his place.

It seems when another keeper gets golden gloves they're in PFA team, when Reina does someone else is

That's pretty bad on the face of it.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

The PFA awards are chosen in February or March, aren't they? Besides, who cares about these awards? Footballers chose Ryan Giggs last year as player of the year, who wasn't even Man Utd's best player last season. The whole thing is a farce and always has been.
