World Cup 2010 - Carragher included in England squad
    Eurosport - Tue, 11 May 13:30:00 2010

Jamie Carragher, Joe Cole and Adam Johnson have been included in Fabio Capello's provisional 30-man squad for this summer's World Cup in South Africa.

Liverpool stalwart Carragher, who announced his retirement from international football in 2007, returns to the fold to provide cover in defence with Gary Neville overlooked entirely.

Chelsea midfielder Cole has been plagued by injury for large parts of this season but his goal in the Premier League title decider against Manchester United helped convince Capello he is worth another look.

Young Manchester City midfielder Johnson is rewarded for his good form this season with a place on the list while his club-mate Gareth Barry is also included, despite currently being out injured.

Barry's inclusion means there is no place for Manchester United's Owen Hargreaves, who had been touted as a replacement for the City man despite having played just one minute of football in 18 months.

Shaun Wright-Phillips, Aaron Lennon and Theo Walcott will compete for a wide slot in Capello's final squad while Tom Huddlestone makes the initial cut in central midfield.

Michael Carrick's indifferent form this season has not deterred Capello from picking him and the Manchester United man completes the midfield line-up along with Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, James Milner and Scott Parker.

Tottenham central defensive pairing Michael Dawson and Ledley King both get the nod alongside Matthew Upson, with Leighton Baines, Stephen Warnock, Glen Johnson and Ashley Cole joining Rio Ferdinand and John Terry at the back.

Capello named five strikers with Sunderland's Darren Bent edging out Bobby Zamora of Fulham and West Ham's Carlton Cole.

Bent, who scored 25 goals this season, joins Tottenham pair Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe, Aston Villa's Emile Heskey and Wayne Rooney of Manchester United.

Just three goalkeepers were named - Joe Hart, David James and Rob Green.

Capello will trim his squad to a final 23 on June 1.

    Full squad list:

Goalkeepers: Joe Hart, David James, Robert Green; Defenders: Leighton Baines, Jamie Carragher, Ashley Cole, Michael Dawson, Rio Ferdinand, Glen Johnson, Ledley King, John Terry, Matthew Upson, Stephen Warnock; Midfielders: Gareth Barry, Michael Carrick, Joe Cole, Steven Gerrard, Tom Huddlestone, Adam Johnson, Frank Lampard, Aaron Lennon, James Milner, Scott Parker, Theo Walcott, Shaun Wright-Phillips; Forwards: Darren Bent, Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe, Emile Heskey, Wayne Rooney.

I just hope, really hope, that Gary Neville's name was pencilled in that squad before Carra changed his mind. That would cheer me up no end.

No suprises really in that squad but there's 2 England games before they trim the squad down.

Presumably they'll go with a 3 keepers, 8 defenders, 8 midfielders and 4 forwards type system.

So they need to cut out 2 defenders, 4 midfielders and 1 striker

You'd imagine only one back up left back is needed so either Warnock or Baines will be out. And one centre back, for me it's between Dawson, King and Upson. Carragher seems to be the only one in there who can cover RB so you'd imagine he's in.

The striker to be cut is IMO almost certain to be Bent IMO, the other have decent records at international level except Heskey who is in to add something different and Capello seems to like him.

That leaves midfielders, there seems to be alot of options on the right side of midfield Lennon, Wright-Phillips, Walcott, Milner and Johnson, you wonder how he's going to sort that out, none of them is nailed on to start the first game of the World cup so that will be the interesting one.

I'd probably agree but Defoe is such a streaky striker I would want to see some form out of him before I definitely went with him.

Milner is nailed on as being in the squad in my opinion for his versatility if nothing else.

I dont see the fuss over Upson, he's distinctly average and if Capello picks him over Dawson in the final 23, he needs his head testing.

I know he's had injury and form problems but i think Joe Cole simply has to go. He can produce moments of magic on the big stage.

I'd ditch Wright-Phillips, Walcott, Huddlestone and Emile Heskey without even thinking about it.

Without doubt, that would cheer me up no end; Carra should come out & say that he only changed his mind after he heard that the Neviller was to be in the 22.

I think Upson has been consistently good over a number of years and is solid in the air. this is Dawson's first season of decent football and unlike Upson he has no past international record. Upson has done a decent (if limited) job for the national team before.

I guess so I hadn't really notice the weakness on the left side, only really Joe Cole (injury doubt) and Adam Johnson (inexperienced) would provide competition on that side.

I can't see all of Barry, Carrick, Parker and Huddlestone making it through either, Huddlestone would be the favourite to get the chop at present, Carrick seems nailed on and maybe one of the other two (probably Parker) not making it.

I reckon SWP has a good chance of making the 23. He's been playing better for England than City over the last few years and Capello seems to rate him.

I really wouldn't take Heskey either.

Heskey is as nailed on as Rooney to go, he will only be omited thru injury

I think Barry's injury really opens up the position. As does Carrick's poor form and lack of game time.

I'd be very surprised if Carrick doesn't go

Same. He's about 90% certain to go.
