World Cup May Wreak Havoc On Office Computers

More than half of working Britons - 54% - are planning to watch the World Cup on their work computer.

All hopes are on England's coach, Fabio Capello

That means millions are risking causing computer chaos with the streamed games as experts warn the practice could cause havoc with machines.

Techies say office computer systems are expected to slow down at the very least and, in some cases, crash entirely.

And most members of staff - 58% - have not given a thought to the possibility of something going wrong, according to the survey of 2,000 members of staff by Eclipse, an internet service provider for small businesses and home users.

"UK workers clearly want to watch World Cup matches live on their PCs," said Eclipse' Clodagh Murphy.

Live streaming takes up a lot of bandwidth

"However, we advise all businesses to be mindful about the impact this could have on their day-to-day business operations. Streamed content uses a lot of bandwidth and this could seriously impact the performance of their business internet connection.

"It could take much longer to download important files or use business-critical applications such as e-commerce sites, email or online backup. It might even lead to office computer systems crashing," she said.

More than half those polled - 56% - did not know whether their organisation had any restrictions or guidelines in place to stop them accessing sites to watch the tournament.

Some 37% thought that watching World Cup matches would not affect their work productivity and a quarter thought there would be no impact on the speed of applications if all employees watched games online at work via online streaming sites.

However, Ms Murphy issued a note of caution saying there could be a potentially disruptive surge in broadband traffic, especially on Wednesday, June 23, when England plays Slovenia at 3pm.

What an England win could look like

The England team are currently training in Austria

"We expect huge interest in that match as it is England's only group game that happens during the working day," she said.

"It will be interesting to see how it impacts networks and connectivity so at Eclipse we have made provision to ensure we have enough capacity for all our customers to be able to enjoy the matches.

"Companies need to be wary about a potential drain on employee productivity and the efficiency of their IT systems that the streaming of the World Cup could cause.

"We suggest that all organisations develop robust guidelines on office computer use to avoid network congestion and slow performance of key applications such as Microsoft Exchange and SharePoint and also online data backup processes," Ms Murphy added.

Work places should bow to employee power & allow them to watch the matches in work as it will encourage morale which in turn crank up productivity...win/win situation all round!
Nope, don't need anger management, you just need to stop pissing me off!

BBC and ITV should both be showing the matches online. Although I wonder how well their sites will cope with the demand

Already booked my holidays for the WC. It's during the night here but I need recovery days after all the England games, semi's and final.

Went well with weekends too, only needed to book 6 days including an extra day off after it's all over. Bonus.

to be fair - not sure about ITV? but i have watched games on the bbc website in the past during office hours, can't remember what games but i'd imagine it was world cup or something of the like with highish demand and it was decent.

I would quite like our office to have a tv on with the sound down low showing the games - don't think it would effect anyone, but it won't happen.

As mentioned in the tv schedule thread, for england games i won't have to take much time off - though i have plenty of holidays available I am considering working out which days or week will be best too take load of time off in one go, and just chill out watching football all day
