    Barca open talks over Fabregas

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/foot...al/8717785.stm

Barcelona say they are in official negotiations with Arsenal to sign Gunners captain Cesc Fabregas.

The Spanish giants told BBC Sport that talks with Arsenal over a deal for the 22-year-old, who is with Spain's World Cup squad, "became formal" on Tuesday.

"An informal conversation with Arsenal became formal on 1 June and now an official approach has been made to the club," said a Barca spokesman.

Arsenal declined to comment when they were contacted by BBC Sport.

The Barca spokesman added: "Before 1 June, under English rules, we could not make an official approach to Arsenal for Fabregas, but that changed on Tuesday.

"I don't think there is a special advance on, say, the price or anything, but it has moved on now."

Barcelona have made it clear they regard Fabregas, who played in the youth team at the Nou Camp before moving to north London seven years ago, is one of their chief transfer targets this summer.

They are reported to have already bid £30m for the player, with Arsenal believed to be holding out for closer to double that amount.

Fabregas, who is currently with Spain's World Cup squad, signed an eight-year contract with the Gunners in 2006 and has been quoted as saying he would join Barcelona if he left the Emirates.

Barcelona director general Joan Oliver revealed on the club's official website: "Everyone knows that Cesc wants to play with Barca and everyone knows we want him to sign but here there is a third actor that is Arsenal.

"Yesterday [Tuesday] we presented a concrete offer and have written to Arsenal."

The vice-president of the Catalan club, Rafael Yuste, added: "We are hoping we can sign Cesc as soon as possible.

"I am optimistic. It is clear that he is family and we would greet his return with a warm embrace.

"For this reason we don't want to do anything that would harm his signing. We don't want to rush but neither will we stop."

Barca also revealed on their website that club director Raul Sanllehi and technical secretary Txiki Begiristain will direct their negotiations.

Can't quite see how this is going to pan out, I don't think Barcelona will want to shell out more than £40m (what an incredibly silly amount of money) in cash for anybody, while Arsenal want £60m.

So will Arsenal accept a few players in exchange?

It's odd the ebb and flow of which is Europe's top league. It never stays the same for too long.

It's been Italy for a few years, then it was Spain for a good few, England took the mantle recently, but there's no doubting Spain are top dog again right now.

I know potentially this benefits us but it's a shame to see some of these genuine stars leaving the Premier League really.

Arsenal are dead right to tell Barca to **** off with there £30 million. They're having a laugh there.

Fabregas is 23, has about 10 years left at the top, is coming into his prime and is on a long-term contract with Arsenal.

Arsenal should be asking for £45/50 million at least.

I have to say I don't really like the way Barca are going about this though - their tactics seem more akin to their Madrid rivals.

The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

That's the exception to the rule of being sad to see good players leave the Premiership.

Am I the only one who cannot understand the fuss over Cesc. He is excellent but nowhere near as good as is made out. Typical English media overhyped player. IMO.

I don't think he's absolute top drawer either. Not at the moment anyway. He's a level below the likes of Xavi, Iniesta and others. He's still so young though so he could be anything eventually.

I can see him being Xavi's long term replacement. Not sure how he'll fit into the current set up, unless they move Iniesta up as one of the front three.

it makes a nice change from the daily news about our top players leaving though.

I'm not so sure. When italy was top dog they had AC, Inter, Juve and then Lazio, Sampdoria, Napoli, Udinese etc all fighting amongst the best from accross the continent. England had its 'big four' phase, if anything I would say the overall quality in Spain has deteriorated over the last few years. Real have improved, Barca stayed about the same and everyone else has dropped massively. Athletico are still quite strong but Sevilla, Valencia etc are going to the wall.

Performances in the Europa cup by english teams finishing outside the CL qualifying places I would argue back up the fact that the EPL is the strongest league in any depth at the moment.
