The Juve job would have been far better for him - and for Juve too.

Former Liverpool manager close to new post

Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti has suggested Rafa Benitez is closing in on the club's vacant managerial post.

Benitez left Liverpool last Thursday but has widely been reported as a target for the Italian giants, who are searching for Jose Mourinho's successor.

Mourinho has departed for Real Madrid after winning the treble at Giuseppe Meazza, paving the way for the Spaniard to take over after he parted company with the Reds.

And Moratti has dropped his biggest hint yet that the 50-year-old is ready to be anointed at the Nerazzurri, with a possible deal only hours away from completion.
      Decisive

Moratti told reporters in Italy: "The next few hours could be decisive. But we must ask (technical director Marco) Branca."

Should Benitez take charge of the Serie A champions as expected, he will reportedly sign three-year terms worth 5million euros a season (£3.5m).

Benitez appears set to take his Anfield assistant Mauricio Pellegrino, goalkeeping coach Xavi Valero and fitness coach Paco de Miguel with him, with Italian Amedeo Carboni - who played under Benitez as a midfielder at Valencia - also likely to be added to his backroom staff.

Benitez had been linked with a move to Juventus, however the Old Lady moved to appoint former Sampdoria boss Luigi del Neri before he had left Liverpool.

      'annointed'

That made me chuckle. Like he's some sort of priest.

      Oh I don't know.

Inter Milan chairman Massimo Moratti expects ex-Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez to take the reins at the San Siro on Tuesday.

Benitez, 50, announced his departure from Anfield by mutual consent last week and had been linked with a switch to the Champions League holders since.

Speaking to SkySport24, Moratti said: "Probably tomorrow the contract will become official. Certain figures that have appeared in the press will be redimensioned however. It was a normal deal, and rapid enough."

Rafa's laughing all the way to the bank then. Stayed stubborn refused to walk and then pocketed £5m from us and now probably another few million signing fee at Inter and a fat contract. Im guessing his bank balance is about £8m better than it was a week ago. Not a bad week for him eh

Last week he would have been scrambling about with his calculator seeing if it will be possible to sell El Zhar to give David Ngog a pay raise. This week at inter, he will be pondering if he wants to take Karim Benzema on loan with an option to buy

Me too. I'd rather he stayed away from our players though

If he really wants Lucas and Insua, we'll have to reluctantly let them go, for a large fee of course.

It wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if Kuyt, Mascherano and Lucas all joined Rafa, aslong as we get decent money and that money is given to Woy.

Might as well totally rip up the squad and start again.

Lucas and kuyt as much as i do like both of those and at times they have been great i think they represent everything that was wrong with Rafa's tenure over the last 5 years.

Good luck to Rafa, **** Inter and he can take as much of his garbage with him as he likes. Couldn't give a monkeys what goes on in the Italian league and hope our new manager knocks him out of the CL. I'm a Liverpool fan and however nice a bloke Rafa was I support the club and not him.

Of course, goes without saying, but personally I hope he wins everything we're not entered in - i.e. the Champions League, Italian League, Italian Cup.
