    Cappello Index

Fabio Capello has published his controversial Capello Index ratings for England's players from the World Cup. The England manager was prevented by the Football Association from running the marks during the tournament but has now gone public with his assessment of their performances.

The goalkeeper Robert Green gets the lowest mark for the tournament with a rating of 51.67 out of 100, having made a dreadful mistake in his only game, against the USA. Jermain Defoe tops the list with an average of 62.47 across the matches he played, which included scoring the winner against Slovenia.

England's second-best player according to the Capello Index was John Terry (60.48). Uruguay's Diego Forlán, who was awarded the official player of the tournament award, gets an average score of 65.77 by comparison.

Wayne Rooney, widely accepted to have had a dismal World Cup, is marked at 58.87, marginally higher than Spain's Fernando Torres and only slightly less than Jérôme Boateng, part of the Germany team that finished third at the tournament.

England's best individual performance of the tournament was rated by the index to be Steven Gerrard's against the USA (66.36).

The marks are calculated using a complicated scoring system which awards points for categories such as long passing, assists, mistakes, dribbles, goals, shots and headers.

Obviously Capello missed the Germany game where Terry and his chronic lack of positional sense lead to at least two of the Germans goals.

How did Upson get such a high rating, he was abysmal.

So Jermaine Defoe and Shaun Wright-Phillips were England's best players? Followed by Gerrard, Terry and Upson?
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

must be true, look at how much they analyse the performances......which leads me to the conclusion that most stats are bollocks as we know allready

            EVENTS DESCRIPTION
            1. LONG RANGE PASS
            Long Range Pass (longrangepass)
CI EVENTS: When a player plays a horizontal ball that cuts at least 2/3 of the pitch in width, o vice versa, but only if the pass reaches his teammate. (Must not be confused with the “switch play”).
            Long Range Pass Error (longrangepasserror)
CI EVENT: When the long-range pass is over hit, or inaccurate, or if the player has to work very hard to recovery it. Must not be confused with the pass error, mistake on long-range pass, or switch play error.
            2. ASSIST
            Assist (assist)
CI EVENT: A potentially decisive pass leading to a goal (without being a goal otherwise it is an assist with a goal) must not be confused with a cross. A pass that puts a teammate in the position where they can score a goal with only one touch.
            Assist with a goal (assistwithgoal)
CI EVENT: A pass that puts a teammate in the condition of scoring a goal (one touch) and the goal is scored. A cross that leads to a goal becomes an assist with goal; if this does not happen it remains a cross or a cross error depending on the quality of the same.
            Nice Assist (niceassist)
CI EVENT: Spectacular pass, o very difficult pass to make, that puts a teammate in the position where they can score with one touch (without there actually being a goal). Often a nice assist, more than a simple assist, will put a teammate in front of goal.
            Nice Assist Goal (niceassistgoal)
CI EVENT: A spectacular pass, o very difficult pass, that puts a teammate in the position of scoring a one-touch goal. A switch play or long-range pass that lead to a goal being scored becomes a nice assist with a goal.
            3. CROSS
            Cross (cross)
CI EVENT: The score is applied 1) when the ball reaches a teammate or 2) when the cross goes into the area but is intercepted and causes a corner or 3) if the cross causes a dangerous situation in the area (B2) even if it does not reach a teammate. TOTAL EVENT (no CI): if the cross made from outside the area (C2;F2) is dangerous but is intercepted and/or cleared by the defence.
            Cross error (crosserror)
CI EVENT: When a player on the wing (C2), inside the area (B2) or from the edge of the box (F2) miss kicks a Cross and causes no threat to the opposition. Typically 1) behind (the ball goes out of play), 2) too long (crosses the whole of the area without a teammate managing to get onto the end of it), 3) totally over hit, or 4) too slow or softly struck (straight into the keepers’ hands). When a player is being pressured whilst attempting a cross.
            Cross Under Pressure (crossunderpressure)
CI EVENT: When a player on the wing (C2), inside the area (B2) or from the edge of the box (F2) crosses under extreme pressure from one or more opposing players (the miss kick is therefore justified).
            Rebounded Cross (reboundedcross)
CI EVENT: When a player on the wing (C2), inside the area (B2) or from the edge of the box (F2) tries to cross but the same is rebounded from by defender.
            Diagonal Defence Cover (diagonaldefensecover)
CI EVENT: 1) When a player (usually an outside defender) closes down diagonally his opponent or 2) when a player (usually a central defender) closes down an opponent towards the wing. The diagonal movement must be decisive and continuous otherwise it is the same as a defensive cover.
            4. DRIBBLING and ACCELERATION WITH THE BALL
            Acceleration with the ball (accelerationwiththeball)
CI EVENT: When a player 1) sprints with the ball at his feet for a large section of the pitch, for example along the wing, creating a counter-attack (if the acceleration leads to beating an opponent this is considered a dribble) or 2) When a player penetrates the opposition’s penalty area. TOTAL EVENT (no CI): When a player goes down the wing and is intercepted by the opposition.
            Dribbling (dribbling)
CI EVENT: A dribble that allows a player to free themselves from their direct opposition, even if by chance or with a lucky rebound.
            Failed Dribble (faileddribble)
CI EVENT: When a player tries to dribble an opposing player without managing to do so. The score is negative only if this happens in E2. If this happens in an offensive area (A2,B2,C2,F2) the CI vote is neutral (60).
            5. AERIAL CHALLENGE
The condition necessary for an aerial challenge to have taken place is that 2 players jump for a ball at the same time (from a cross or long range pass), not from a goal kick o defensive clearance.
            Aerial Challenge Lost (aerialchallengelost)
CI EVENT: When a player doesn't manage to header the ball therefore losing out on the challenge.
            Aerial Challenge Won (aerialchallengewon)
CI EVENT: When a player manages to header the ball therefore winning the aerial challenge.
            6. Mistake (movement and one against one)
            Wrong Movement (wrongmovement)
CI EVENT: The wrong movement made by a player that provokes a dangerous situation for ones own team; for example a wrong offside trap or man marking mistake (always done by the defender).
            Serious Wrong Movement (seriouswrongmovement)
CI EVENT: see movementerror adding the fact that it has caused a goal.
            One Against One Mistake (oneagainstonemistake)
CI EVENT: A players' mistake that 1) even if not being beaten, has allowed himself to be disorientated by a dribble, or 2) allows his opponent to cross without contrasting his dummy, 3) If a player allows his opponent too much room therefore allowing to become a threat. TOTAL EVENT (no CI): Only in certain cases related to luck, such as a lucky rebound.
One Against One Beaten Player (oneagainstonebeatenplayer)
CI EVENT: A player's mistake that leads to him being beaten 1) by an opponent, even after a lucky rebound. It is usually the result of a dribble or acceleration with the ball or 2) as last man which isn't penalised as often there can be a sending off if a fouls is committed.
            7. SENDING OFFS, BOOKINGS AND FOULS
            Sending Off (sendingoff)
CI EVENT: Straight red (if the sending off is for 2 yellows it is a TOTAL EVENT, as bellow). TOTAL EVENT (no CI): If the sending off is for 2 bookings the rating will be a (40 + 40), and no red.
            Booking (booking)
CI EVENTS: no matter what type of foul is committed.
            Foul (foul)

            Missed Chance (missedchance)
CI EVENT: When a player in a good position doesn’t manage to score an easy goal because 1) he puts it wide 2) he hits the goalie, 3) he allows for a defender to recover, 4) he miss kicks the ball or misses it all together. If in doubt, then no missed chance is given.
            Super Goal (supergoal) + 100
FCI EVENT: All the goals scored in E2, overhead kicks, volleys, back heels or directly from a corner.
            9. INTERCEPTIONS and DEFENSIVE COVER
            Defensive Cover (defensivecover)
CI EVENT: Points are scored only to the player that does this defensive move. For example 1) the intervention of a defender sends the ball behind for a corner. 2) An intervention that sends the ball out of play, unless a sliding tackle or a full speed recovery has been done. 3) When a defender plays the ball back to the goalie with his head. The necessary condition for this event to be considered is that the ball is touched, except in exceptional cases, such as when a defender lets the ball roll out of play holding off an opponent.
            Interception (interception)
CI EVENT: 1) A voluntary intervention from a player that wants to interrupt an opponents' move and get control of the ball. For example, when he clears a cross, or deflects a pass or shot. Even if the ball is deflected involuntarily in the area this is considered an interception if an opponent can't get to the ball. 2) If a player gets to the ball before his opponent and/or holds him off as seen before this too is considered an interception. When a player 1) gets to the ball before his opponent, even if he doesn’t hold onto possession, or 2) when a player, even if he is behind the opponent, doesn’t allow him to touch the ball. It is the same for all types of passes. TOTAL EVENT (no CI): When and interception takes place outside the area in a fortuitous manner.
            10. LONG RANGE PASS and SWITCH PLAY
All long range passes and switch play shots are aerial (with rare exceptions) vertical passes and/or from the centre of the pitch towards the edges.
            Switch Play (switchplay)
CI EVENT: The switch play pass (with rare low ball exceptions) played with a minimum inclination of about 25°, 30°, cuts across the pitch from one side to the other (from right to left, or vice versa) and successfully reaches a teammate. It must not to be confused with a long-range pass to a teammate, which is scored with the same points. TOTAL EVENT (no CI): If the switch play pass, even if it doesn’t reach a teammate, is considered nice and effective (it causes a corner kick or a danger to the defence).
            Switch Play Mistake (switchplaymistake)
CI EVENT: When a switch play pass is totally over hit or when a teammate is forced to make a difficult recovery.
            Long-range Pass (longrangepass)
CI EVENT: A pass that creates a dangerous situation even if it doesn’t reach a teammate but, 3) forces a defender to cause a corner, 4) forces the goalie to come out. Traditional crosses made from the E1 or E2 area are also included in this category. If the pass is made backwards it will be considered a pass.
Long Range Pass To A Team Mate (longrangepass)

I think think should the the first and last Capello Index otherwise he is going to make himself a bit of a joke! He just needs to concentrate on picking a group of players who can actually play as a team!

Capello index scores for England vs Germany:

                  Johnson 53.21
                  Cole 54.5
                  Terry 60.0
                  Upson 60.87
                  Barry 57.17
                  Gerrard 57.22
                  Lampard 63.2

                  Rooney 62.72
                  Defoe 59.38

I can't believe that Terry and Upson scored so highly
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

The best player in the tournament (Forlan) only scored 65.77, so according to the scores his performances were only 5% better than Defoe's

So its true, sometimes when you over analyse you miss the point. England where ****e. Rooney was garbage, Terry was a kunt who probable caused massive unrest amongst the players. Gerrard was hit and miss. Crouch maybe could have done soemthing if give the playing time.

I'd hate to thing what rafa's rating index was like. Capello and Rafa probable spent more hours on the computer then talking to the players

Fabio Capello has demanded the Capello Index be removed from the internet after insisting he had not seen or approved of the rankings.

The rankings first appeared this morning, and were not kind to the England players after they were knocked out at the last 16 stage in a 4-1 defeat to Germany.

The Football Association released a statement to Press Association Sport this afternoon saying the rankings had not been approved.

"A spokesman from the FA said that the index ratings had not been seen or approved by Mr Capello, were published without his knowledge and that his representatives have taken immediate steps to have the material taken down," the statement said.
