Suarez is staying? And the defender too?I read something the other night about Ajax pulling out of a deal to sell the defender to Bayern.Maybe it helped keep Jol?

I thought Jol was prepared to sacrifice Suarez as it was the only way they could raise the funds that he's asked for?

Martin Jol has lifted the lid on his aborted move to Fulham and revealed the stubborn Ajax board stopped his return to London.

Jol, 54, had been earmarked by the Cottagers as the man to replace new Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson. Despite agreeing terms with chief executive Alistair Mackintosh, the Amsterdam giants refused to let go of their man and discuss compensation.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, the ex-Tottenham Hotspur boss admitted he had craved a return to London but this was blocked by the Ajax hierarchy.

"It was unbelievable [Fulham's interest]. I like Fulham, I like England, I like London," Jol said.

"I was probably a bit disappointed to say 'no' as the board wouldn't let me go under any circumstances."

Jol continued he had resigned himself to staying in the Netherlands as he didn't want to go to court to force through his switch.

"I was offered a good job, at a good club, with good players. I was willing to go there, but that's it, I'm under contract," he continued.

"We spoke about it, not only for five minutes but for hours and I have to say now, it's Thursday, it took a long time which is probably not good for this club as Ajax is a big club with one and a half million fans in Holland. Internationally, we want to do something and I had to tell them [Fulham] I had to stay.

"I don't want the problems of going to court because Ajax is too big to put in any misery."

Fulham have reached an agreement with Mark Hughes for him to become their new manager, BBC Sport understands.

An announcement will be made by the club after legal negotiations are completed, possibly later on Thursday.

Former Manchester United and Chelsea striker Hughes, 46, has been out of work since parting company with Manchester City last December.

He replaces Roy Hodgson, who left Fulham earlier this month to take charge at Liverpool.

Fulham had wanted to recruit Ajax boss Martin Jol but were forced to look elsewhere when the Dutch club refused to let him leave.

Hughes began his managerial career with Wales in 1999, taking them to the brink of qualification for Euro 2004, only to denied by a play-off loss to Russia.

In 2004, he was appointed by Blackburn, where he took them to an FA Cup semi-final and also a place in the Uefa Cup.

He took charge of City in 2008 but the club's change of ownership and hugely increased budget and level of expectation meant he only had 18 months in the job before he was replaced by Roberto Mancini.

At Fulham, he will be working with more modest resources, but he inherits a side left in good shape by Hodgson.

Last season, Hodgson guided the Cottagers on a memorable Europa League campaign, which saw them lose in the final to Atletico Madrid.

Be Interesting to see who he goes for, not got much time to ship in/out

I guess he will be straight in for Bellamy.

Be surprised if Bellamy goes there. I know Hughes likes him and they've followed each other around a bit, but didn't Bellamy say Hughes is not his friend and he doesn't have his number? Think the relationship soured at City.
