Premier League - Houllier 'plots Owen move'
              Eurosport - Sun, 12 Sep 12:18:00 2010

Michael Owen could make a sensational switch from Manchester United to Aston Villa when the transfer window re-opens.

The former England striker is a leading target for new Villa boss Gerard Houllier, according to the News of the World.

Owen's United career has stalled, with the 30-year-old yet to start a competitive fixture this season after falling behind in-form Dimitar Berbatov in the pecking order of strikers at Old Trafford.

He also angered some United fans by donning the shirt of his former club Liverpool to play in Jamie Carragher's testimonial match.

Owen enjoyed his best years under Houllier at Anfield, and his prolific form won him the coveted Ballon d'Or award in 2001, after Liverpool's treble of League Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Cup.

Houllier was presented as the new Villa boss on Friday, and the 63-year-old succeeds Martin O'Neill who quit just days before the start of the season.

O'Neill walked out of Villa Park in a dispute over the club's lack of clout in the transfer market.

However, a move for Owen would not stretch owner Randy Lerner's resources, as the striker would be available either on loan or for a nominal fee when transfers resume in January.

Owen joined United on a free transfer in summer 2009 after leaving Newcastle United following the club's relegation.

He played at Liverpool from 1996 to 2004 before joining Real Madrid for £8m.

The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

I really hope Houllier fails miserably. I have no affection left for him at all- he just winds me up big time. Classless fool.

Aston Villa have confirmed that Gary McAllister has agreed to become assistant manager to Gerard Houllier.

McAllister was assistant to Gordon Strachan at Middlesbrough but had been targeted by Houllier, who signed him as a player during his time at Liverpool.

The former Scotland international, capped 57 times, was described by the new Villa manager as "my most inspirational signing" during his time at Liverpool.

McAllister played a key role in the treble triumph of UEFA Cup, FA Cup and League Cup in 2001.

McAllister, who has also managed Coventry and Leeds, is joined in Villa's backroom team by Gordon Cowans.

The former Villa favourite, who was capped 10 times for England, joined Villa as an apprentice when he was 15 years old and in three spells at the club made a total of 527 appearances. He has been coaching Villa's youth teams for many years.

Rafa Gonzalez, who came to the club in the 2007-08 season as goalkeeping coach to the reserve team, will be goalkeeping coach, while Robert Duverne - who worked with Houllier at Lyon where they won back-to-back titles - will assist as coach/fitness coach.

Classy player and classy man is Gary Mac.

Had a quick flick through a couple of Villa forums and, on the whole, they're all behind the Houllier appointment. Will be interesting to see how he does there.
