it does look like most owners dont like managers to have so much power. Not many do and on the continent its even less. I wonder in sport usa are the people just coaches?
Managers will always want more money boards will always want to spend less or see results and these day almost instant results.
Still not seen anything that means Learner is a bad owner. ( i am not saying he isnt a bad owner just that this doesnt make him a bad owner)

that's a good point and to my mind the answer is yes, although i don't claim to know a lot about the subject.

Cannot speak for our other yank sports but football definately has a headcoach/general manager arrangment. The GM is responsible for making the deals for players while keeping an eye on the salary cap. The head coach does have some say in who is acquired but mostly states the type of player he needs to fit their particular scheme. Some of the more successful coaches (Bill Parcells is one that comes to mind) have a role that approaches that of a typical English/European style manager. Most American owners are loath to give one person that much power and as such is the exception rather than the rule. If a coach has a long history of success then they can usually negotiate more control over the draft and free agency process.
I am a Saints fan (grew up in New Orleans) and can tell you that the two most successful periods in Saints history also coincide with the two best GMs we had - Jim Finks and (currently) Micky Loomis.
