25 man rule will lead to court battles, says Wenger

Arsene Wenger claims the 25-man squad rule will lead to court battles - Football News - Football - Sport - People.co.uk

Arsene Wenger fears the Premier League’s new 25-man squad rule will cause carnage – and end in players ripping up their contracts.*

The Gunners boss revealed a FIFA regulation is in place in the top-flight that allows any player who features in less than 10 per cent of matches over the course of a season to terminate their contract and seek compensation for loss of earnings.*

He said: “Players have already integrated into the way of thinking that clubs have to give their list of 25 names to the Premier League. They think, ‘If I am not in the 25 I will retire, or I will go here, or I will go there, or I go to court’.*

“Do not forget that in England if a player plays less than 10 per cent of games in a season – which is a FIFA rule – you can get rid of your contract. I would like to know when they voted in the Premier League that they knew this rule.

“It would not count if you are injured. But if you do not play enough games, you can get in front of a FIFA commission that then decides how much money you have to pay to buy out your contract.*

“If you are not in the 25 how can you play? Yet a player who doesn’t play more than 10 per cent of games can go to FIFA and say I want to get rid of my contract.”

Didn't know that 10% rule. Interesting.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

If you're not in the 25 then i think it's safe to assume your club will be looking to get rid of you anyway, so i can't see what Wenger is getting at?

He is saying players will leave on a free if they dont play enough games.

I didnt know this rule, as surly every year reserve keepers will be on there way

Not on a free, on a fee set by a tribunal. But if you've bought a player and then don't play him, then so be it.

That rule will be exploited by cheap players anyway, the £2m gambles that don't pay off, or the squad fillers. The £15mil players will feature in more than 10% of the games so it won't apply.

Does just being in the match day squad count as 'featuring' though?

That could be how it works for reserve keepers.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

surely if they dont make the top 25 in a club and they are worth more than a free transfer, then the clubs should seek to move them on.

its for the good of the game that the playing talent is spread wider so arsenal/man city et al should shut it and move those players on to other clubs. bellamy to spurs, cardiff, ourselves, wherever is good for the game rather than sitting in city's reserves.

a great move against the richest clubs hoarding top talent.
