MATCH REPORT: LATICS 0 CHELSEA 6

Latics unlucky not to come away with result after brave performance

    WIGAN ATHLETIC 0

    CHELSEA 6
    Malouda 34
    Anelka, 48, 52
    Kalou, 78, 90
    Benayoun 90+2

    Report by Paul Chialton

A harsh score-line for Latics whose performance, particularly in the first-half, deserved more and certainly went a long way to banishing the memories of their opening day defeat.

Last season's double-winners looked anything like the sort early on, but their quality shone through taking full advantage of whatever chances came their way.

Roberto Martinez had demanded a display from his team earlier in the week, and his side were unlucky to go into half-time behind, having been the best side by far and certainly stirring the home crowd.

Hugo Rodallega and Maynor Figueroa came closest to finding an opening during the first 45 minutes, but their efforts were well dealt with Petr Cech. Maybe at times a bit more cutting edge was needed in the final third but the team cannot be questioned for their commitment, putting Chelsea on the back-foot more than once.

At the back Steve Gohouri was fantastic, winning the majority of the 50-50 challenges he was up against and trying desperately to push the team forward in attack. Alongside him Ronnie Stam made his first start for the club and impressed with his tireless work up and down the right-wing.

Hendry Thomas was also handed a start and played with his usual hunger in the centre, working hard to win the ball back and doing well against formidable opponents.

Overall the score-line is a hurtful one, but a performance was essential today first and foremost. Latics gave everything they had and if luck had of been on their side maybe they would have been coming away with what they deserved.

Latics: Kirkland; Stam, Alcaraz, Gohouri, Figueroa (Boyce, 84); Diame (McArthur, 80), Thomas; N'Zogbia, McCarthy (Watson 78), Rodallega; Boselli

Subs: Al Habsi, Moses, Gomez, McArthur, Scotland

Chelsea: Cech; Ivanovic (Ferreira, 63), Terry, Alex, Cole; Mikel, Essien (Benayoun, 78), Lampard; Malouda (Kalou, 70), Drogba, Anelka

Subs: Hilario, Zhirkov, Benayoun, van Aanholt, Borini

In denial or what, fair enough they played better than they did against Blackpool but that wasn't hard to do and they were still comprehensively beaten - conceding some real soft goals.

Martinez is starting to piss me off tbh, he seems to be making excuse after excuse for his team instead of laying into them which they fully deserve.
Get the impression he's too soft.

Oh and how **** is Chris Kirkland? ****ing hell!!! - can't believe he was tipped to be our num1 for the next ten years when we signed him and also England's

What he says in front of the cameras, and what he says in the confines of the dressing room, are a gazillion miles apart.

No sensible manager hangs his players out to dry in front of the media. Doesnt mean he isnt bollocking them in private.

I'm not saying he should slaughter them but ffs he can be half honest, it must infuriate the Wigan fans when he's coming out with all this inexperienced team/new players/we're getting their bollocks.

I just get the impression that he's too nice with his team.

Just after having a look on the Wigan Forums and they seem to want him out:

"We got the reaction we needed"

"There are lots of positives to build on after a 6-0 defeat."

"We dont need to look at the scoreline, just the positives to build on."

"Delighted with the potential we showed."

"Our aim at Wigan Athletic is to achieve our aims"

Is he on the same planet as us really?

          ---------------------------------------------------------------
He's a joke!! An embarrassment to the club!!
          ---------------------------------------------------------------

I wouldn't go that far but it would be nice just once after a huge twonking someone would come out and say "this is unacceptable, we were crap".

By saying every heavy defeat is a positive it almost makes it acceptable.
          ----------------------------------------------------------------------
That's what's embarrassing...the complete utter tosh that comes from the guys mouth! It's cringeworthy..an embarrassment to the club in the way that we've conceded 9,8,6 god knows how many times! Were an Effing laughing stock! And it's no coincedence that all this has occurred under his managerial leadership!

His positioning for Anelka's first goal was absolute ****e........it would be an insult to Sunday league keepers to call it Sunday league standard.
Incredible to believe this fella is making a living in the Premiership (at least for now)

After watching both Kirkland and Carson, last weekend, I just thought "Well done, Mr Corrigan".

                  Oh wait, you said sensible..
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

Just watched the goals he let in yesterday against Chelsea and quite frankly he's an embarrassment for every one of the six goals - jumping all over the show, misjudging, taking up terrible positions, chickening out with crosses coming in...seriously woeful display.
